Bumper Fields for Saturday's Stakes Races

With one weekend to go before the Adelaide Festival of Racing kicks off, horses are coming from all around the country to be part of the Adelaide Racing Carnival.

The increased prizemoney has attracted huge fields throughout the carnival and the big fields for Saturday's black-type races should produce plenty of value for punters.

Race 1 - Group 3 Breeders' Stakes

Saturday kicks off with the Group 3 Breeders' Stakes for the two year olds and there are some smart young horses getting around in this race.

The Hayes' & Dabernig Stable will be looking to go back-to-back in the race with Will's Bid who is first up after finishing 13th in this year's Group 1 Blue Diamond. He gets the services of champion jockey Damien Oliver and is a $10 chance with UBET.

The Will Clarken trained Split Lip has won two on the trot including the Listed Dequetteville Stakes in her last start. She is a $7 chance with UBET and will have leading Adelaide jockey Jamie Kah ride.

Fellow Listed winner Time Awaits is the $5 favourite for the race from the Tony McEvoy yard. He will also saddle up $12 chance My Bad in the race.

Race 6 - Listed City of Adelaide Stakes

The Listed City of Adelaide Stakes looks to be a tightly contested affair with plenty of live chances in the 1400m race.

Interstate visitor Kenjorwood is the early favourite at $3.40 with UBET, while locally trained Mubakkir is next in line at $4 after a second placing in Listed company last start at Flemington.

The two Darren Weir trained runners, Kenjorwood and Killarney Kid will have to carry 61kgs each on Saturday but 2013 winner, Linton proved it can be done when he carried 62kgs victory with Jamie Mott on board.

The Wayne Francis & Glen Kent trained Rocket Commander will be hoping to go one better than last year when she finished second behind Zebulon.

Jockey Todd Pannell will team up again with Listed Oakbank Stakes winner Riziz hoping to make it three black-type wins this month.

Previous Listed City of Adelaide Stakes Winners

Year Horse Starting Price Previous Run
2016 Zebulon $5.30 2nd Group 2 Autumn Stakes Caulfield 1400m
2015 Dylanson $9 3rd Listed Golden Mile Bendigo 1600m
2014 Maybe Discreet $8.10 6th Listed Matrice Morphettville 1200m
2013 Linton $4.20F 5th Group 1 William Reid Moonee Valley 1200m
2012 Verco Road $27 1st Listed CS Hayes Morphettville 1600m
2011 Budriguez $2.60F 6th Listed CS Hayes Morphettville 1600m

The last six winners of the City of Adelaide have contested a black-type race in their last start. Only four runners (Kenjorwood, Riziz, Rocket Commander and Mubakkir) on Saturday will be following the same pattern.

While a favourite hasn't won since Linton in 2013, the starting price of five of the last six winners has been in single figures, showing there hasn't been too many surprise winners of the City of Adelaide in recent times.

Race 7 - Listed Nitschke Stakes

A quality field has assembled for the running of this year's Listed Nitschke Stakes and the race looks incredibly even with the David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig trained Zunbaqa the early $4.60 favourite with UBET. The filly was last seen in the Listed Laelia where she finished seventh behind Kenedna.

The Gordon Richards trained Chapel City is a $7 chance after his second placing behind the undefeated Desert Lashes earlier in the month while the Victorian pair Plenty to Like and Waterloo Sunset are also well supported in the market.

The last South Australian trained winner of the Nitschke was I'm Discreet from the Richard Jolly yard in 2010. With only four interstate runners left in the field there is a good chance that could change on Saturday.

Previous Listed Nitschke Stakes Winners

Year Horse Starting Price Previous Run Next Run
2016 Rageese $1.90F !st Sandown HCP 1300m N/A
2015 Japhils $5.40 2nd Caulfield HCP 1400m 5th Group 2 Queen of The South Stakes
2014 Tango's Daughter $1.80F !st Sandown BM70 1300m 1st Group 2 Queen of The South Stakes

2012 Balzeus $19.20 9th Sandown BM72 1200m 5th Listed Adelaide Guineas

Favourites have had a good record in recent times in the Nitschke with two saluting in the last three years and the favourite in 2015 Actuariat ran second behind Japhils. While this year's race is a much more open contest, it does bode well for current favourite Zunbaqa.

The last four winners of the Nitschke has also finished first or second in their last run. Amazingly there are nine horses who recorded a top two finish in their last start in Saturday's field.
