The final field is locked and loaded for Monday’s Group 2 Adelaide Cup and we currently have 21 horses in the running for the biggest prize in South Australian racing. We have a look at each of the Cup hopefuls and preview their chances.
- Eastender - Barry Campbell | Craig Newitt (18)
The Tasmanian has won four on the trot including the Group 3 Hobart and Launceston Cups. A fantastic stayer but hasn’t won over 2600m. Has beaten a lot of his rivals on Monday back in his home state. Wide draw is a slight concern.
- Fabrizio - Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Stephen Baster (10)
The Launceston Cup runner up has four consecutive black type placings to his name and all losing margins have been less than a length and a half. The natural leader will have his work cut out but you always need to respect a Waterhouse/Bott horse when they come to Adelaide
- Bondeiger - Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | James Winks (2)
Was a dominant winner of the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes at Morphettville on the weekend. He was very impressive in that run but the last horse to do the Lord Reims/Adelaide Cup double was Apache King way back in 2001.
- Naval Warfare - Chris Waller | Corey Brown (1)
The Chris Waller trained five-year-old was no match for the super talented Schabau in the Listed Roy Higgins on the weekend. He’s in great form and that race looks to be the strong form race of the Cup.
- Aloft - Eric Musgrove | Jason Holder (8)
Beat last year’s Adelaide Cup winner Fanatic in last year’s Roy Higgins which has been a strong form race in the past. Hasn’t been able to recapture that form since joining Eric Musgrove and was gone a long way from home in Saturday’s running of the Roy Higgins.
- Lamborghini - Patrick Payne | Michael Dee (16)
Came storming home to run third in the Launceston Cup and has put together a great preparation this season. First seen here when arriving in Australia in 2017 and ran second to the handy Royal Rumble in his Australian debut at the track.
- Sylpheed - Matt Cumani | Dom Tourneur (14)
The mare was an eye-catching run against the boys in Saturday’s Lord Reims Stakes. Stays at 53kg for the Cup and has been very impressive under Matt Cumani who has reinvented the mare as a stayer.
- Olympic Academy - Grant Young | Raquel Clark (15)
The 70 start veteran was a bit plain in the Lord Reims Stakes finishing seventh. Was incredibly impressive two starts prior where he won by over seven lengths over Henry the Dolphin and Azurite. Clark rode him that day and gets back aboard for the Cup.
- Double Bluff - Aaron Purcell | Fred Kersley (12)
The eight-year-old ran fifth behind Schabau in a hot edition of the Roy Higgins. He’s lining up in third Adelaide Cup in 2019 after running second in the 2017 and fourth in 2018.
- Top of the Range - Michael Moroney | William Pike (20)
Ran on well for third in the Roy Higgins and gets the services of gun Western Australian hoop, William Pike. Wide gate isn’t ideal but is a good each way chance.
- Aagas - Ryan Balfour | Corey Parish (6)
One of the leading local chances, just never gives up. Has an outstanding record for his trainer Ryan Balfour and on his recent efforts is a sneaky place chance, especially from a favourable draw.
- Dawn Raid - Matt Cumani | Dean Yendall (3)
Over ten lengths off the winner in the Listed Victoria Cup and has never won beyond the mile.
- Khezerabad - Aaron Purcell | Jye McNeil (13)
A genuine stayer who has won over the 3200m in the UK. Has been working up to this trip in weaker races and could be a knockout chance.
- Exalted Lightning - Grant Young | Georgina Cartwright (11)
Sixth in this race last year but just hasn’t been able to recapture that form in 2019.
- Azurite - Michael Hickmott | Chris Caserta (21)
Drawn the carpark which might make it hard to see him turn the tables on a few of these that beat him comfortably in the Lord Reims.
- Surprise Baby - Paul Preusker | Dean Holland (4)
Has only had five career starts for three wins. Was less than two lengths of Schabau three weeks ago over 2000m and is a big unknown in this race.
- Franked - Michael Hickmott | Jamie Kah (7)
The lightly raced son of Frankel was exceptional wining his last start by four lengths over his stablemate Azurite. He’s drawn well and is a knockout chance especially with Jamie Kah on board.
- October Date - Nick Smart | Kayla Crowther (5)
Surprised many with a great run in the Lord Reims for third place. Has a great record at Morphettville with five wins from 15 starts. Drawn handy and Kayla Crowther has been riding well in Victoria.
- Bon Equus - Kevin & Heather Frew | Patrick Moloney (17)
Will be first up for his new stable after coming across from the Joe Pride yard in Sydney. Hasn’t contested anything of this level before so might find it tough to win.
- Henry the Dolphin - Mark Faust | Sairyn Fawke (19)
Won a 2600m race on the Parks track in December at $81 and has had a couple handy runs since then. A big step up in grade on Monday though.
- Pat the Weapon - Stuart Gower | Zac Spain (9)
Emergency for the big race. Has one win and three placings from his last five starts at lower grades. Would be tough to see him turning the tables of some of these.
