The highly anticipated opening of South Australia's newest racetrack is finally here, with Murray Bridge's Gifford Hill facility set to celebrate its official opening race day this Saturday 10 August.
Saturday's standalone metropolitan race meeting will showcase the facility's state-of-the art racetrack as well as the $20 million Bridges Function Centre.
Thoroughbred Racing SA Chief Operating Officer Nick Redin said that Gifford Hill's impressive offering was worth the wait.
"We've tested this track several times now, at trials and a mid-week race day, and the feedback from trainers and spectators has been the same - this is an outstanding track and a top-class facility," he said.
"This is South Australia's largest training centre outside Morphettville. We have good sized fields and plenty of interest this Saturday - I can't wait.
"We're excited about what Gifford Hill has to offer and what it means for the Murray Bridge community, the local industry and the future of South Australian racing."
Murray Bridge Racing Club Secretary/Manager John Buhagiar said the Club was anticipating healthy crowds at Saturday's race day.
"We're keen to put the facility through its paces and really show off what it's capable of," he said.
"It's our first Saturday race meeting for many years which gives us the opportunity to have city-level prizemoney for our official opening.
"That's really exciting, so we're looking forward to welcoming plenty of locals and visitors."
Gifford Hill's extensive range of food and catering outlets will be on offer on the day, as well as live music and an official opening ceremony.
As for on the track, Mr Buhagiar is happy with the strong fields and quality of racing on show.
"Local trainers have been absolutely raring to get racing on this track, and that support has led to very strong fields throughout the day.
"Saturday will be a huge day in the history of our Club, and we can't wait to share it with everyone who has helped us build this next chapter."
