Five to Face-off in the Clare Valley Cup

A small bunch of runners are set to do battle in Sunday’s Clare Valley Cup, right in the heart of one of our state’s great wine regions.

It may only be a small field but it looks to be a very interesting race on paper with every horse a chance to take home some silverware.

We look at each runner in the Cup and assess their chances.

Borris in Ossory – Trainer: Grant Young | Jockey: Sophie Logan

The seven-year-old has had the preparation of his life with a second placing in the Listed Murray Bridge Cup and a win in October’s Gawler Cup.

He’s on the quick back up after contesting the Vigneron’s Cup at Strathalbyn where he finished way back in the field. He didn’t lead that day which he had been doing previously with lots of success. In a small field he should get that luxury and while he’ll be 1350m out to 1800m he should run a strong race.

His rider, apprentice Sophie Logan is one of only three jockeys to have multiple wins at Clare in 2019 and the two are a big chance to combine for their second Cup of the spring.

Korodon – Trainer: Richard & Chantelle Jolly | Jockey: Paul Gatt

The in-form runner of the field is undefeated over 1800m in three career starts.

His BM80 win two starts back over 1800m at Morphettville was a really good win and should have him ready for this race.

Richard Jolly always has a good showing at Clare and he’s also got the in-form Paul Gatt in the saddle who’s had 21 winners already this season.

He looks like the horse who has found the perfect race and should be tough to beat.

Wanted By All – Trainer: Chris Bieg | Jockey: Ryan Hurdle

The last start winner’s best form is usually over a mile and he steps up to the 1800m for the first time in his career. The only time he’s raced over further was the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes two years ago.

Chris Bieg trained a winner at Clare earlier this year and had Excites Zelady finish his career here in last year’s Cup running third.

Jockey Ryan Hurdle takes the reigns on Sunday and is one of the in-form riders in the state, already picking up 17 wins for the season.

There’s questions marks over him running out the 1800m but if he can, he’ll be right there in the mix.

Set to Cruise – Trainer: Mick Huxtable | Jockey: Dom Tourneur

Mick Huxtable’s mare returns to the track where she won her maiden race last year over 1800m.

While she’s been around the mark in her last few starts, she didn’t get near Korodon in his two wins at Morphettville.

She’s honest and her record over the distance says that she’s a good chance to fill the placings.

Oh So Unfair – Trainer: Shayne Cahill | Jockey: David Tootell

Finished second in this race last year behind Chu Chu Charlie. While he was probably in better form this time last year, he has had four wins and two seconds from eleven starts over the 1800m.

This year’s Jamestown Cup winner will combine once again with jockey David Tootell as they search for another mid north trophy.
