Media Release: Thoroughbred Racing SA announces new Chief Executive Officer

In what has been a planned succession at the top of the controlling body for thoroughbred racing in South Australia, Nick Redin has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of TRSA.

He takes over from Jim Watters who steps down today having served as CEO since April 2009. Jim will stay on in an advisory capacity until 3rd July to ensure a smooth transition.

The two have enjoyed a strong and successful working relationship over the past 10 years, with Nick serving as the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer.

In that time, TRSA has overseen transformational change for the South Australian industry, with highlights including the $35 million Murray Bridge redevelopment, the $13 million Gawler racetrack and facility upgrade, a landmark seven-year media rights deal and a 52% overall increase in prizemoney levels since 2010.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve over the past decade, but I am also a strong believer in succession planning and after almost 11 years in the role see this as the right time to step aside,” Jim said.

“There’s a lot that has been accomplished across all levels of the business, from prizemoney levels and major infrastructure projects through to policy settings and ongoing investment.

“I feel privileged to have been involved, and very quickly after my move to SA became a passionate supporter of SA thoroughbred racing. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done and I was delighted that the Board shared my confidence in appointing Nick to the CEO role. I look forward to helping Nick as he takes over the reins.”

TRSA Chair Frances Nelson QC welcomed Nick to the role and paid tribute to Jim for his service.

“I think South Australian racing has been very fortunate to have had the benefit of Jim’s leadership and professionalism,” she said.

“That extended to the way in which he advised the Board in the middle of last year of his intentions to stand down this year, to enable us to deal with the issue as strategically as possible.

“The Board viewed Nick Redin as an ideal replacement, both from his understanding of the racing community and our industry as well as his acumen and skill set.

“We are delighted to have secured Nick as our CEO and believe thoroughbred racing in South Australia is in very good hands.”

Incoming CEO Nick Redin said the industry faced a range of opportunities and challenges.

“We know where we are relative to where we want to be, and we are working on a range of strategies to get there,” Nick said.

“I’m looking forward to working with the industry at all levels to continue to grow and protect thoroughbred racing in South Australia.”
