2020 Adelaide Cup Race Day preview

The biggest day on the SA racing calendar will see some of the nation’s best horses and jockeys converge on Morphettville for the 2020 TAB Adelaide Cup.

Quality fields, quality horses and a buzzing crowd will make the day a hit for racing fans and those who love a big occasion.

Thrilling C.S. Hayes Memorial Cup beckons

A highlight of Adelaide Cup Day each year is the Listed C.S. Hayes Memorial Cup over the mile. This year’s field is very even, boasting at least four or five winning chances. Local hope Regalo Di Gaetano scored a barnstorming win last Saturday and is gunning for three in a row, while canny Victorian trainer Matt Cumani will be hoping Wetakemanhattan can improve on his last-start sixth at this track. Charossa, Over Exposure, Picklehaube and Kardashing – from the Ciaron Maher/David Eustace stable – all have winning hopes in what shapes as a thrilling race.

Visiting hoop eyes successive Matrice Stakes

Jockey John Allen will be looking for back-to-back wins in the $100,000 Listed Matrice Stakes over 1200m, race 8 on the program.

Allen won last year’s renewal on Snitzkraft and is aboard Runson for Leon and Troy Corstens.

In another even field, winning hopes include the McEvoy stable’s last-start winner Beauty, local trainer Chris Bieg’s talented three-year-old Free of Debt, and Hard Empire, from the yard of Richard and Chantelle Jolly.

2YOs run for Magic Millions cash

The big-money events start earlier in the day with race 2, the $200,000 Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1200m.

As usual, the event has brought together some hugely talented youngsters, headed by Robbie Griffiths’ Glenfiddich, which finished an unlucky fifth in the recent Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield.

The McEvoy Stable’s Bribery finished hard over the 1050m of the Cinderella Stakes at Morphettville last Saturday and looks well suited with the extra journey this week. Likewise Richard and Chantelle Jolly’s Kirinia ran particularly well in the Cinderella Stakes and could easily improve on its fourth placing.

Victorian visitors Amish Boy and Sea Witness both ran in a Listed race in Melbourne last month and should be well in the market on Monday.

Superstar jockey to ride at Morphettville

Superstar jockey Damian Lane will ride at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day.

Lane had an extraordinary 2019, capturing the Golden Slipper (Kiamichi), Caulfield Cup (Mer De Glace) and Cox Plate (Lys Gracieux), among other feature race wins.

He will ride the Adelaide Cup favourite, King Of Leogrance, but also has rides the Listed Matrice Stakes (Fleet Review) and $202,000 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (Bribery).

Best of the day

Race 1 #2 Farooq

It would be great to start Adelaide Cup Day in style with a winner, and Sue Murphy’s Farooq could deliver the goods. Farooq was enormous at Morphettville last Saturday, rounding up the field to win running away over 1600m. Monday’s 2006-metre journey should suit and the class rise chould be offset by the sweet barrier draw.
