Lincoln Moore's Gawler Preview

SA racing industry journalist Lincoln Moore has had a look over the mid week Gawler meet and found a few he likes.

RACE 1 - 12:45PM Kongorong – Zed Cup Winner 100 years ago Three & Four Year Old Class One Handicap (1100 METRES)

Good race to start with the return of ANNIKA. She was runner-up behind Seemingly Discreet and Jive Baby before winning at Strathalbyn as a $1.50 back in February and went to the paddock after running fourth behind Puissance Dusoleil at Morphettville. She was beaten by Promoter in a recent jump out. That horse went to Morphettville last weekend for his debut and was backed like he couldn’t lose. She ran to the line under a good hold in the jump out and looks the clear top pick. OUR BOY BAILEY looked good leading through here in a metro grade race last time out. He’s got plenty of weight and a sticky gate but looks a danger, as does BRIMARVI ROOBOY who was well backed to jump favourite last time. His previous run was in better grade and he can bounce back. OUTPOST has gone OK his past couple while HATEECH did run a $1.18 favourite here back in January.

SELECTIONS: ANNIKA, Our Boy Bailey, Outpost

RACE 2 - 1:20PM Mr Vincent A Zed / SABOIS Maiden Plate (1716 METRES)

Another good race early in the day and I think the step out to 1716m really suits both KING AND KING and MELODY MAN. Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s KING AND KING was very good at his first run in SA, coming with a good late run to finish second behind Neodium over the mile. The extra trip looks ideal and he’s always shown the stable above-average ability. He will box seat from the inside gate. MELODY MAN, son of former handy mare Extra Virgin (by Fiorente), should really appreciate the ground. He ran really well on debut coming from a long way back to pull plenty of ground off Denreklaw and The Olympian (who has since run really well in town). He’s drawn out, will get back again, but has Todd Pannell on, and if they’re making ground wide he will go close. ARMAMENT is going well and deserves to break through. He finished fourth behind The Brumby two runs back before boxing on OK at Murray Bridge last time when he raced handy in the race won by Neodium. GUNFIREINTHECITY has been knocking on the door and drops back in trip after leading behind Magnus Man last time here.

SELECTIONS: MELODY MAN, King And King, Armament

RACE 3 - 1:55PM Jockey J.H (Jack) Keily / SABOIS Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)

Looks a good race for XINGYUN, who had good specking on debut but never travelled well in the run and looked to have his chance when third behind Narrative Star. He draws a gate and market confidence last time makes him worth another chance. HI SMOKEY has been OK at all three runs this time in. He led and gave a good sight behind Denreklaw at Murray Bridge last time, the wide gate hasn’t helped his claims but he’ll press forward. STAYING STRONG resumes and was in the market at all three runs before a break. He has some upside and must be kept safe. SARNIA ran well when ridden off the speed behind The Krone two starts back over 1400m, jumped to the mile and raced handy but only battled behind Nodium last time. She’s back to 1200m here but drawn a tricky barrier. Stablemate THE HAITIAN POET got well back and was only beaten three lengths behind Denreklaw last time and could be an improver. EIGHT OVER EIGHT looks the early speed, while GENRAL MINT was placed twice in maiden company earlier in the year.

SELECTIONS: XINGYUN, High Smokey, Staying Strong

RACE 4 - 2:30PM Coopers Brewery Benchmark 62 Handicap (1100 METRES)

CHUCKY is the interesting runner. Formerly with Will Clarken, he went to Andrew Clarken and is now with Justin Pickering. His first start in a race was super. Despite being beaten he charged home from a mile back to be narrowly beaten by Metro Tramp. He came here and won his maiden easily and then went to the paddock after running fourth to First Diamond. He again ran a slashing race first-up behind Lake District Girl before running 7th in the 2019 Redelva behind Humma Humma and Behemoth. He hasn’t race since, but that’s pretty good form for this. He finished last, but wasn’t knocked around in a recent Morphettville jump out and draws a nice gate. The $4.20 in early markets looks a good price. AUSTRALIAN DESIGN had specking at a price when he won first-up in SA at Strathalbyn and his past two have been OK. He got back in the race won by The Difference at Morphettville last time and looks much better graded here. HUSHIANO defeated Ready Sunshine at Morphettville two runs back before chasing home Beermint last time, with The Difference running second. That form should stack up well here. AADELAD ran OK first-up when 5th behind Hypersonic but has never placed in five second-up outings. MASTERATI looks a likely leader.

SELECTIONS: CHUCKY, Hushiano, Australian Design

RACE 5 - 3:05PM Wolf Blass Rascals Cup Benchmark 54 Handicap (1516 METRES)

RAPID RAISER has won four of 17 and he was given a freshen-up before a nice run when 4th behind Blow Torch at Murray Bridge. He’s back slightly in trip but drawn a good gate and Todd Pannell rides. Stablemate FLORIANO has some upside and has one win and three placings from her eight starts, She ran 5th behind Star Status in a $100k race at Morphettville back in December and her first-up run behind Royalty at Murray Bridge was good. She has a good second-up record and the claim for Margaret Collett. AZZUREROS resumes here and has jumped out pretty well. He was taken to Bordertown for a kill in March and found the line behind Master Of Zerprise at Murray Bridge in April. He’s jumped out well for his return and expect to see him running on late. ALLAYEZ has won two of his past three and will appreciate the weight relief for Jacob Opperman. WAIKATO EXPRESS is fitter for three runs back from a long break and back in July last year he did defeat Territory Titan at Morphettville. TATTIES made good ground at big odds behind ALLAYEZ at Gawler last time and meets that horse much better at the weights.

SELECTIONS: FLORIANO, Rapid Raiser, Alleyez

RACE 6 - 3:40PM 2020 Zed Cup – 100 Years On Benchmark 62 Handicap (2121 METRES)

Hard race to line them up and was keen on SUPER SWOOP before his scratching. AMMO LOCO justified favouritism to win at Balaklava over 2200m two runs back before being beaten 2.7 lengths behind Just Rolling at Murray Bridge. PERSIAN EMPIRE ran really well at Murray Bridge last time, coming from a long way back to beat all but Just Rolling. ANNAMAN has ran well at both runs back from a spell, beaten 3.9 lengths behind Mihany two starts back before again being placed behind Cobbers Mate here last time. He’s only won four of 62 which is a concern but he’s going well enough to figure here. Local SPIEGEL GROVE has won six (placed eight) of 26 runs here and pulled late ground off Cobbers Mate last time. He must be respected. MAGNUS MAN likes this track and trip and boxed on fairly when up in class at Morphettville last weekend. Stablemate KARAOKE EXPRESS ran on well into third at a price in that same race and is capable in this class. SEATTLE SOUND is second-up for Luke O’Connor but needs to improve. Happy to stay out of this one.

SELECTIONS: ANNAMAN, Spiegel Grove, Karaoke Express

RACE 7 - 4:15PM Wolf Blass Wines Rating 0-58 Handicap (1200 METRES)

CARBONE is low flying and won three on end here before heading to town when he got well back and made ground beaten 4.2 length behind The Difference. Sticky gate but he will settle back and looks into this up to his ears, even with the 60kg. CARLALUISA ran really well behind Silverhawk in town two runs back before she was held-up at a crucial stage before the turn but only battled behind Sadente. SPIRITED MATCH was a winner here two back and was OK last time, beaten 1.5 lengths behind Pivotal Force. PANZA PRINCESS has been runner-up her past couple and was favourite here last time out. CRYPTO CURRENCY led throughout to score here two back before being backed into favourite when 5th beaten 5.8 lengths behind Rothmoore last time. He’s drawn to make his own luck on speed from gate three and will give this a shake.

SELECTIONS: CARBONE, Carlaluisa, Crypto Currency

BEST BET: CARBONE (Race 7)

EACH-WAY: FLORIANO (Race 5)

VALUE: ANNAMAN (Race 6)
