Bordertown Cup Preview

The Limestone Coast Country Cup action continues this Sunday with the running of the Bordertown Cup. A field of ten runners are set to line up in Sunday’s feature with a number of horses a good chance to take home a piece of silverware.

The super consistent Flow Meter just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Even though he’s only won once in his last fourteen starts, he’s never finished worse than fourth in any of them which is really some achievement. He’s been running really well in BM80 company in Adelaide and thoroughly deserves a win here on Sunday. He was also runner-up in this race in 2017, so knows his way around the Bordertown track and unlike a lot of his major rivals here he runs the 2000m incredibly well and should be hard to beat.

Trainer of last year’s winner Costa Lante, Sue Jaensch will have another live chance in Sunday’s Cup with Pass the Glass. The mare ran third in this year’s Penola Cup over 2100m so you know she’ll get the trip and will have the luxury of the experience Paul Gatt aboard. Looking back to two starts ago, she ran fourth behind Secret Blaze over the mile and that horse has since run extremely well across the border winning at Moonee Valley before running second in the Listed Pakenham Cup.

It wouldn’t be a South Australian Country Cup without a Grant Young runner and the Murray Bridge based trainer will saddle up See the Master on Sunday. He’s a recent addition to the stable after being brought down south from Chris Waller’s Queensland base. He battled a bit in his first two runs for Young but ran a real eyecatcher last start at Morphettville over 1950m. With a drop in weight and a touch more distance, he’s one to keep an eye on come Sunday.

Peressini has settled back into South Australian life nicely after a stint in the Northern Territory earlier this year. The eight-year-old has slowly been building up in distance each start and gets out to a trip that he’s run well over in the past. The 1.5kg claim from Gary Lo should help his chances and while his last start was a bit disappointing in town, he will find this race winnable.

There will only be two last start winners in the field with Richard Nicholson’s Dyagilev and Stephen Lenehan’s Daktari coming into the race as winners. Nine-year-old Daktari has two wins over 2000m in his career but this will be a big jump up in class, winning his last outing in BM58 class, while the Cup will be Dyagilev’s longest ever race start. He’s been running pretty well in the south east lately and while this will be a step up for him, his win over 1550m last start was quite impressive.
