Weights favour SA stayer in Launceston Cup

A big turnaround in the weights is in the favour of South Australian stayer Classic Weiwei in today’s $250,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup.

Classic Weiwei meets Hobart Cup winner Double You Tee 4.5kg better after the Patrick Payne-trained six-year-old defeated him by 1.25 lengths last time out.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy have booked leading hoop Craig Newitt for the ride and the pair will jump from barrier nine with Double You Tee drawn even wider in barrier 10 with Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jye McNeil again in the saddle.

Double You Tee is marked a $3.10 favourite with tab.com.au ahead of recent Listed Birthday Cup winner Barade ($4), who finished third in the Hobart Cup and is also drawn wide in barrier 13, while Classic Weiwei is a $7.50 chance.

Meanwhile former South Australian trainer Lloyd Kennewell will team with good mate Joe Bowditch chasing successive Tasmanian wins with Ethical Solution in the $150,000 Vamos Stakes for fillies and mares.

Ethical Solution started her career in SA with Will Clarken, had three runs for Kennewell before winning five of eight starts for Travis Doudle. She then rejoined Kennewell in Melbourne and won impressively first-up in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Stakes at Hobart.

She bumps into All-Star Mile hopeful Still A Star, who has won seven of 12 starts and has finished runner-up at her five other race appearances.
