Lincoln Moore's Derby Day Preview

BEST BET: CHERRY TORTONI (Race 8)

EACH-WAY: CALYPSO REIGN (Race 4)

VALUE: CALL ME SHAMUS (Race 6)

RACE 1 - 11:40AM Accolade Wines Handicap (Morphettville Parks Track) (1000 METRES)

STAR OF UMA has a good record and was placed in the Twilight Glow before a break. She was runner-up behind Grandslam at her only start here on the Parks. She draws to make her own luck and has trialled OK. This is a step up in class for GREAT LEVELLER on his latest win but he maps well from a good gate and must be respected. He’s raced in similar company previously. COP A CLIP draws out but is a dual winner. GAZE GRISE will make her own luck from the gate and was good holding All In War at Murray Bridge last start. SQUIZZY MIZZY has ability and gets Damien Oliver.

SELECTIONS: STAR OF UMA, Great Leveller, Gaze Grise

RACE 2 - 12:15PM TAB South Australian Sires' Produce Stakes (Morphettville Parks Track) (1400 METRES)

THREE KINGS has come back in good form. He was runner-up at Sandown before winning at Ballarat and Flemington. He’s drawn a sticky gate but is proven at the 1400m and looks the one to beat. CLOUDY has been super here in SA, winning the Dequetteville and Breeders’ Stakes. She’ll get a gun run from the inside and must be respected. KARACASU was brave behind Cloudy last time and draws wide but should be thereabouts. PRINCESS RAFFLES has been bursting to break through and the 1400m ticks a lot of boxes. FOREVER AND A DAY trialled up well and was well backed at Geelong on debut and is drawn a good gate to be in the finish, while stablemate COSMIC RANGER is on debut. BISCAYNE BAY chased home Three Kings at Flemington last time.

SELECTIONS: THREE KINGS, Cloudy, Karacasu

RACE 3 - 12:50PM Peter Elberg Funerals Autumn Series Final (Morphettville Parks Track) (1400 METRES)

I’ve been in the corner HE’S A BALTER at his past couple and he’s been good behind Lady Dunmore, who has won since, and Mister Yu Shu last time. He’ll get every chance from the inside gate and is worth one more chance. NEODIUM has been in great form here in SA and two of his most recent wins were this track and trip. He’ll roll forward and be right in the finish. WINGS OF PASTRAMI was very good first-up from a spell behind Deep Dive and should appreciate getting out in trip – but where she ends up from a wide gate here is the issue. BORN TO PLAY has been runner-up at all three starts this time around and was solid behind Mister Yu Shu last time. She’s only won a maiden but must be given some thought here with the blinkers going on for the first time.

SELECTIONS: HE’S A BALTER, Neodium, Wings Of Pastrami

RACE 4 - 1:25PM Happy Birthday Michael Larecki Handicap (1200 METRES)

CALYPSO REIGN had nothing go right when held-up at the vital stage behind Magna Bella last time. He maps well from gate five and his best form is right up to this. MUSIC ADDITION has a good record and was runner-up in the Christmas Handicap and he led last time behind Blinder. Back to 1200m looks ideal and is sure to run well. DEBT COLLECTOR has talent and he got going late first-up from a spell behind Brimarvi Vehero. He draws out but has Damian Lane and should be hitting the line hard. TOO GOOD TOO HARD was sent out favourite first up from a spell and got going late behind Streetcar Stranger. OCTANE has won three of five starts here but his two runs back have been fair at best. However, he maps well, has the claim and a turnaround would not surprise. MIDNIGHT STORM hasn’t done much wrong for the Macdonald/Gluyas barn and should be right in the action from an inside gate.

SELECTIONS: CALYPSO REIGN, Debt Collector, Too Goo Too Hard

RACE 5 - 2PM Weslo Security Handicap (1050 METRES)

Another good race. APPALACHIAN is a nice horse when he puts it together and was very good winning against the pattern two starts back before another good effort when ridden for luck from a wide gate behind Lunar Hero. The barrier looks ideal and happy to take the $2.90. BUTTON EXPRESS has a handy record and wasn’t far away last time at Moonee Valley when she made ground from well back. LOAD AND GO maps well from the barrier, while BRAZEN BRANDO is another who draws well but this does look slightly harder.

SELECTIONS: APPALACHIAN, Button Express, Load And Go

RACE 6 - 2:40PM Furphy Provincial Super Series Final (1800 METRES)

Looks the perfect race for REYNOLDS who won well first-up at Oakbank before stepping up in class and beating Echo Boomer, who has been racing in great form. He gets some weight relief on last time when he looked the winner at Murray Bridge before Sadente got him. He should give this a big shake. CALL ME SHAMUS maps well from a good barrier and has won two of three starts here, including a win over Echo Boomer in February. SADENTE was good when ridden off the speed to run down Bajan and Reynolds last start and this looks a winnable race again. I give GRACIEBIRD a sneaky chance at a big price after making ground in two good runs this time in. She draws gate three and the step out to 1800m appeals. CUBAN TOONITE is racing well in weaker grade and draws poorly. BAJAN has won four races here and was good last time behind Sadente.

SELECTIONS: REYNOLDS, Call Me Shamus, Sadente

RACE 7 - 3:20PM TAB South Australian Derby (2500 METRES)

A handful of genuine winning chances here. Staying with DEEPSTRIKE, who was unlucky in the Chairman’s Stakes last time when he never got clear. He won well previously and is sure to take some beating here. EXPLOSIVE JACK is chasing a third Derby win for the season. He won the Tassie Derby before returning to form to win the ATC Derby in Sydney last time. I think PERSONAL has claims here. She was good in last week’s Oaks behind Media Award and Damien Oliver stays with her. LIQUEURO is a good horse. He’s won four of five starts and was too good for Explosive Jack two starts back. ROYAL MILE is low flying and maps well from the good gate. LET’S KARAKA DEEL looks right in this on a good effort behind Royal Mile last time and the 2500m is right up his alley.

SELECTIONS: DEEPSTRIKE, Explosive Jack, Personal

RACE 8 - 4:00PM Adelaide Galvanising Adelaide Guineas (1600 METRES)

Looks the ideal race for CHERRY TORTONI, who has performed at the top level throughout his career and was huge behind Lunar Fox in the Australian Guineas. His last two runs have bene OK and he’s favourite for a reason. Liked the last-start run of WAY TO GO PAULA, who had specking and ran well behind Incredulous Dream in the Nitschke Stakes. That shapes as an interesting form race with a host of horses running on, including AGREEABLE, who settled back and worked to line well. POINT BLAZE was very good in the same race, while HIGHLY DISCREET was another who hit the line strongly in that race.

SELECTIONS: CHERRY TORTONI, Way To Go Paula, Agreeable

RACE 9 - 4:35PM Terry Howe Printing SA Sprint Series Final (1100 METRES)

SOUL OBSESSION maps to get a nice run here and chased home Streetcar Stranger last time out. She’s been set for this and should strip fitter and take beating from the perfect barrier. ANITRA was very good first-up in SA for Will Clarken and was ridden forward on the pace in the Nitschke Stakes. This looks a drop in class and she can turn it around. ALL IN WAR has been bursting to break through and found the line strongly again last time behind Gaze Grise. TRIP will make the speed despite a wide gate, while TOFF LOVE draws out but could also roll forward. LANCASTER SOUND is flying but this is a big step up in class, SECRET WAR is lightly raced but has a handy record, while TRYGVE is going well and maps well. He’s big odds and could be worth a place ticket.

SELECTIONS: SOUL OBSESSION, Anitra, All In War
