Explosive derby win number three for Jack

Explosive Jack took out the SA Derby at Morphettville today, winning the Group 1, $502,250 feature in superb – and convincing – style.

In winning his third derby, Explosive Jack proved himself the superior stayer, surging clear up the home straight under the urgings of jockey John Allen, who claimed his fourth SA Derby – and back-to-back triumphs in the 2500m classic, after piloting Russian Camelot last year.

The win was also a triumph for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who have now won derbies in Tasmania, NSW and SA with the son of Jakkalberry.

Maher was on track at Morphettville and paid tribute to Allen.

“Johnny, super ride,” he said.

“I was a bit worried there early… but you had it in hand.”

Explosive Jack finished more than two lengths clear of runner-up Let’s Karaka Deel and third placegetter Nobel Heights. South Aussie roughie Shebringzit ran an enormous race to finish fourth.

Maher hinted that his young stayer’s Derby run may continue to Queensland and what would be a remarkable fourth derby.
