Clarken out to exploit Beau’s fitness edge

Todd Pannell will try to use Beau Rossa’s fitness edge to bring about the undoing of the big guns in Saturday’s $502,250 Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

The three-year-old comes off an impressive Tobin Bronze Stakes win and trainer Will Clarken is hoping that going into the Goodwood at his fifth start for the campaign can prove the key to upstaging the favourites Gytrash and Behemoth, who are both heading in fresh.

“We really want to turn it into a good gallop,” Clarken said on RSN.

“He’s the fittest horse going into the race and gets a little bit of weight off them.

“Three-year-olds historically don’t get in well at the weights, taking on two Group 1 winners, but he’s very fit and well and we want to try and expose them late.”

Clarken has always had a big opinion of Beau Rossa and believes the horse can develop into a very good horse from anywhere between the 1200m to mile journeys.

“I think he’s shaping very much like a horse like Behemoth,” Clarken said.

“He’s got some learning to do, he makes mistakes in races and we’ve applied the blinkers for that reason.

“Off his Tobin Bronze win, that won’t quite win the Goodwood so we’ve changed a few things up to get the extra length out of him. We’ve put him through some hard galloping sessions and we want to expose those horses who could be a touch underdone.”

Some impressive work since his last-start win, coupled with the blinkers, will mean they won’t die wondering.

“I don’t think it’s much of a disadvantage that he’s drawn eight,” Clarken said.

“If they do try and steady up midrace he can roll up to them and make sure they’re building the tempo.

“And I like him with a bit of room in his races.

“He’s been up a while. Anything can happen in this situation but he’s there to run well and has had a really good two weeks on the training track.”
