OTT Profile: Apache Sunrise

We spoke to Mel Adamson and Dimi, who ran in three races as Apache Star in 2011. Mel and Dimi are making a significant impact off the track!

I purchased “Dimi” in January 2017 – as a “birthday present” to myself.  He was/is my first horse.

I had ridden for a fair bit of my life but then had a good 15-20 year hiatus from horses, before I made the decision to get my own horse – Dimi.

I purchased Dimi with the intent of joining Pony Club, doing low level eventing and having a go at just about anything else.

Dimi has been a willing “partner in crime” enjoying giving anything a go and is a much loved member of our family.  I love the big ranga and the OTT has a special place in our hearts.  Dimi tries his heart out, even if sometimes getting conflicting aids from me.

Most horses take to Dimi very quickly and there’s more than a few “bromances” around involving the big ranga.

Dimi loves to be involved with everything at home or out.  Helping my husband wash the ute, dig post holes for his yard, checking out hubby’s lunch and general foreman of all.

Career highlights for us as a partnership – representing our pony club – Gawler River (GRPC) at Zones in Team on the Flat, representing our Zone (LNZ-Lower Northern Zone) at State Champs (2019) at Kadina and being in the winning over 26 Prelim Dressage Team.  Dimi loves PC Mounted games – during the bending race, there was me yelling at him to stop cantering as he doesn’t do flying changes for all the spectators to yell back yes he does as he proceeded to change leads at each pole – we finished 2nd. Winning Monarto ODE Grade 5 2018.

Unfortunately we had most of 2020 off – initially with Dimi having a torn stifle muscle, then Covid, then my 2nd Knee Replacement.

2021 – has seen us both step it up – I’ve gotten my confidence back and we have been placed in all our Grade 5 ODEs this year, with the aim for double clears in XC and we did, finishing within time (except for our own club ODE, when we had a disagreement on direction which ended with us slightly over time).

Due to having 2020 off, we hadn’t qualified for States 2021, so we worked on competing at the Masters Games– where we had an awesome PB in the Dressage – Prelim 1B and 5 medals in Show Jumping – Gold 1, Silver 2, Bronze 2 with our first go at 65 cm resulting in an unexpected Gold.

Monarto was an awesome fun event and Dimi felt so confident and surefooted, we felt like we were flying.

To receive the stunning OTT rug was very unexpected and truly lovely.
