McEvoys sweep features, Splash Some Cash wins Cup, Bain breaks through

Tony and Calvin McEvoy had a day out at Murray Bridge on Magic Millions Day walking away with both features.

High-priced yearling Twin Stars was impressive beating All Sassed Up in 2yo Classic with Jake Toeroek in the saddle while Barend Vorster guided Zoist to victory in the inaugural Three and Four-Year-Old Classic.

McEvoy said Twin Stars, who fetched $225,000 at last year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, was horse with plenty of scope going forward after winning on raw ability.

“He’s a lovely big horse,” McEvoy said.

“He’s a gangly sort of fellow and he’s growing into his frame. He’s always shown us he had nice talent.

“I think he’s a miler when he gets a bit older. He’s big and strong and Jake did a great job on him, giving him a bit of cover – he was very strong,” McEvoy added.

Zoist, who was a $280,000 purchase, was perfectly ridden by Vorster to join in strongly on the turn before proving too strong late.

Zoist was the second leg of a winning double for Vorster who win the opening race aboard One More Jack, while Jess Eaton also banked a double in combination with Michael Hickmott with Oath of Omerta and Munster successful.

MEANWHILE Splash Some Cash made it consecutive country cups winning Friday’s Port Lincoln Cup.

Ridden confidently by Sophie Logan, Splash Some Cash showed plenty of fight to deny Dexter You Devil a third straight Port Lincoln feature which followed his Kangaroo Island Cup success just under two weeks earlier.

“To get the win on him means a lot,’’ Logan said.

“He was keen, I know he’s tough, my fella was very strong,’’ she said.

AND at Bordertown on Sunday dual code horseman Aaron Bain celebrated his first thoroughbred success when Finch ‘N’ Chips scored in maiden company.

Finch ‘N’ Chips One was well backed and given a perfect run by Anna Jordsjo, to give one of the state’s most progressive horseman his breakthrough win.
