Group 1 winners highlight Goodwood noms

Three time Group 1 winner Behemoth and 2020 winner Trekking headline nominations for Saturday week’s $502,250 Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

Racing SA received 45 nominations for SA racing’s sprint feature including the first three horses over the line in last week’s Group 1 Sangster Stakes.

Exciting three-year-old Extreme Warrior heads the pre-post market for the feature at $5 ahead of In The Boat ($6) who will come to Adelaide on the back of an impressive last-start victory in the $500,000 Discovery at Sale.

Trekking rounded out his preparation with an impressive jump-out at Morphettville on Tuesday morning with Jess Eaton in the saddle where he defeated Dalasan.

Godolphin senior foreman Sean Keogh said he couldn’t fault Trekking despite being beaten into fifth behind Bella Vella in the Irwin Stakes in Adelaide.

“That’s typical Trekking,’’ Keogh said.

“He’s been to Morphettville before and settled in just as well this time around,’’ he said.

Godolphin is yet to make a final call where stablemate Kementari will join Trekking in Adelaide.

Trainer James Cummings is expected to make a decision on Wednesday if the horse heads to Brisbane for this weekend’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 or comes to Adelaide for the Goodwood.

2019 Goodwood runner-up Behemoth ticked all the boxes required by trainer David Jolly with his return in last Saturday’s Group 3 D C McKay Stakes closing strongly from the back behind to be beaten just 1.3 lengths behind Free Of Debt.

“That’s what I wanted to see,’’ Jolly said.

Likewise Ryan Balfour couldn’t fault the run of Outlaws Revenge who came from last to be beaten just 2.2 lengths in the same race.

“He produced some really good sectionals,’’ Balfour said.

“He’s come through the run really well,’’ he said.
