I Am Bene set for interstate test

Promising South Australian mare I Am Bene heads to Melbourne in what trainer Andrew Clarken hopes will be a stepping stone to spring success.

I Am Bene has created a big impression in just four starts.

She won her first two starts before a game effort when second behind Seradess in the Group 2 Proud Miss Stakes at Morphettville during the Adelaide Racing Carnival. The mare then resumed with a very nice effort running fourth behind exciting sprinter Extremely Lucky first up in the Lightning Stakes.

“I thought her run first-up was good given she was on the inside in what was probably the inferior going,’’ Clarken said.

“We’ve thrown her in the deep end a little bit, this is a pretty strong race for a Benchmark 78 but hopefully the trip away will be good for her and we’ll know what to expect heading back in the spring,’’ he said.

Clarken came close to Group 2 success last season with Magna Bella who finished second in the Stock Stakes at Moonee Valley, a mare who also finished fourth in the Listed Paris Lane Stakes at Flemington - a race Clarken is looking at with I Am Bene.

“The Paris Lane could be a nice race for her over 1400m early in the spring and not at the top end,’’ Clarken said.

I Am Bene is marked a $3.70 favourite with tab.com.au.
