Weekend Wrap: Lingani keeps impressing, Lai picks up another cup

Exciting mare Lingani continued her rapid progression lugging a big weight to her fifth win from just nine starts at Morphettville on the Parks at the weekend.

While many were predicting the swing in weights would give the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained Aviatress a chance of turning the tables, the last-start Lightning Stakes winner thrived on another brilliant ride from Dom Tourneur to take a gap between horses and power away for a soft victory.

The Listed Wylie Handicap at Morphettville next month is her likely next mission.

“The thing about this horse, she’s a big scopey type of mare and (I thought) if anyone can handle weight she can,’’ Belinda Blanch, who trains in partnership with husband Peter, said.

“She’s an absolute delight to have around.

“She’s lovely and relaxed, she’s an absolute sweetheart and I wish they were all like that,’’ she said.

Former Tasmanian apprentice Taylor Johnstone took riding honours with her first metropolitan double.

Johnstone winning aboard Chamber’s Bay for the Phillip Stokes stable before claiming the last race of the day with the Jon O’Connor-trained Winning Revolution.

At Quorn on Saturday the superb run for apprentice Alan Lai was again to the fore winning his third successive country cup feature aboard Grinzinger Star in the Quorn Cup for Kylie McKerlie and Waylon Hornhardt.

Lai was also successful aboard stablemate Emme’s Secret in the opening race, that combination bookending the meeting with Cry Cry Baby returning to winning form.
