The third and final Group 1 day of the 2020 Adelaide Racing Carnival hosts South Australia’s biggest race: the Furphy Goodwood.
Always a favourite on the SA racing calendar, the Goodwood has gone to a new level since it was changed from a handicap to a set weights plus penalties race from 2007 onwards.
The 1200m sprint now routinely attracts some of the nation’s best sprinters, as evidenced by a snapshot of recent winners, which include Santa Ana Lane (2018), Vega Magic (2017), Black Heart Bart (2016) and Takeover Target (2009). And of course Black Caviar made her second and final SA appearance when taking out the 2012 Goodwood in fine style. Trekking took out the 2020 edition of The Goodwood. In a Goodwood that was expected to be dominated by the big-name South Australian sprinters, it was a picture-perfect ride from Barend Vorster that saw one of the outsiders upstage his better-performed rivals. Hugging the rails around the home turn Savatoxl burst away from rivals on straightening before safely holding Instant Celebrity and Gytrash in the run to the line.
