Racing SA works with a "Registered Training Organisation" to promote and facilitate the Racing Qualifications. The Racing Certificates are designed to help build foundation skills from an entry level through to high level roles, and even onto further learning at diploma levels.
The qualifications can also lead to ancillary qualifications and further education, supporting students into a Cert IV Farrier qualification, Equine Dentistry, Veterinary Nursing, Animal Care, Business Administration, Stewards, Race Judging/Handicapping, welfare and integrity roles, and beyond.

The units of competency, skill sets and qualifications in the RGR Racing and Breeding Training Package Training Package cover a diverse range of work activities within the industry. The following table lists the qualifications and provides an overview of occupational outcomes for each qualification.

Certificate II RGR20221 Certificate II in Racing Industry (Stablehand)- Traineeship | The Certificate II in Racing Industry reflects the role of new entrants to the racing industry. The provides an introduction to the racing industry and allows for specialisation in the industry sector role as Stablehand. In this course, students develop an understanding and knowledge of the prime function of care for horses to meet their individual needs of feeding, grooming, exercising, transporting and racing, as well as an understanding of the racing industry and the many roles that exist as career pathways to the industry. |
Certificate III RGR30218 Certificate III in Racing (Stablehand)- Traineeship RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider)- Traineeship | The Certificate III qualification is an “on-the-job” traineeship – with students needing competencies to gain a permanent part-time or full-time employment with a Racehorse Trainer. Stable hand practical tasks include interpreting information, education in nutrition, breeding, equine anatomy and physiology. Practical tasks include daily stable routines and provide racehorses care and exercise. Track Work rider include stablehand routine tasks with focus on developing riding skills and fitness to exercise racehorses at various paces, implementing Racehorse Trainers instructions and report on horse behaviour, performance and health. |
Certificate IV RGR40118 Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer)- Apprenticeship RGR40218 Certificate IV in Racing (Jockey)- Apprenticeship | The Certificate IV qualification reflects the role of individuals to undertake work in varied contexts using a broad range of specialised knowledge and skills. Certificate IV is suitable for senior workers and technicians who supervise or lead teams. Certificate IV also serves as a pathway for further learning. Race Horse Trainers are individuals licensed to operate a horse training business under racing industry regulated licensing criteria for the purpose of competing in industry-regulated events in the harness or thoroughbred racing codes. The qualification covers the care, maintenance and performance of racehorses and the tasks and duties associated with running a racing establishment, including managing staff, finances and equipment. Trainers are responsible for planning and organising their own work, leading others and carrying out often complex and non-routine tasks. A Cert III Qualification is recommended, and time working in the industry. A four- year apprenticeship indentured to a Racehorse Trainer: Jockeys are athletes who ride racehorses at race meetings, barrier trials and trackwork. A jockey possesses the highest level of race riding skills, requiring a high degree of decision-making skill and reaction time during races, and the ability to exercise judgement when choosing mounts and assessing horse form. |
