With the establishment of the new Apprentice Academy facility in Somerton Park, Racing SA has introduced a pathway program for professional development opportunities available to the broader racing participants. It is designed to engage with current registered staff to enhance and foster talent, upskill, promote safety and welfare standards, understanding of Rules of Racing, opportunities for riding coaching and enhancing the overall general racing knowledge.

Racing SA’s Apprentice Academy Talent Manager, Ruby Mayers, Jockey Coach Dean Pettit and Multiple Group 1 winning jockey and Racing SA’s industry, development and training officer Clare Lindop are facilitating FREE Professional Development workshops. 

The series of workshops will suit, Stable hands, track-work riders, and those thinking about career progression into foreperson, jockey and horse trainer roles, or even gain an insight to progress into other areas of the racing industry.

Purpose

  • Access to guest speakers, industry insights, professional coaching and personal development resources. The aims to foster talent development, promoting safety and welfare standards, and enhancing the overall quality of the racing workforce.
  • The program showcases pathways for participants to advance from entry-level roles to more specialized positions within the racing industry, supporting long-term career sustainability.
  • It's especially designed to equip aspiring jockeys, as a pathway into the Apprenitce Acadamy, and we also encourage other racing professionals and budding horse trainers to access the program.

Key Objectives:

  • Workforce Development: Prepare participants for various roles within the racing industry, including jockeying, horse training, and racehorse care
  • Skills: Targeted education in areas such as riding techniques, horse training, physical fitness, nutrition, mental resilience, and business skills
  • Industry Compliance: Ensure participants are well-versed in the Rules of Racing, safety protocols, and ethical standards, thereby contributing to a safer and more regulated industry.
  • Career Progression: Provide pathways for participants to advance from entry-level roles to more specialised positions within the racing industry, supporting long-term career sustainability.

Program Structure:

  • Eligibility: Open to individuals aged 15 and above who are currently engaged in or have completed a Certificate III in Racing Trackwork Rider/Stablehand or similar qualifications relevant to horse training.
  • Delivery: Twice monthly workshop style training sessions, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience in both riding and training contexts.     
  • Community Support: Stay connected with peers and coaches via our dedicated WhatsApp group.
