Racecourse Groundsperson and Sport Turf Racecourse Curator

About the Role

Race Clubs across South Australia employ a Racing Operations team to ensure delivery of superior quality racing surfaces, training facilities, landscaped grounds and associated amenities.

Sports Turf Traineeships are available working to learn about turf management, preparing surfaces for race day and sand/synthetic tracks for horse training. Trainees will also learn about irrigation, land care, general groundskeeping, garden & horticulture as well as using different machinery and driving tractors.

A few of your key responsibilities:

  • Routine maintenance of grounds, racetracks, turf, synthetic, artificial and other surfaces
  • Moving running rails and attending to other raceday and pre-raceday set up requirements
  • Assisting with race day operations and racecourse infrastructure projects.
  • Operate, maintain and adjust turf machinery – can learn on the job
  • Apply fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides – under supervision
  • Support the gardening team in the planting and trimming of trees, sowing, planting and cutting of grass and watering of plants, gardens, trees, lawns
  • Remove cuttings, rakes leaves, cleans/empty litter bins, clean gutters/drains/culverts

Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team environment
  • High degree of communication and interpersonal skills
  • In this role, you will need to be able to lift heavy objects, bend and move without restriction.
  • An understanding of the Racing Industry is helpful, but not essential
  • Good work ethic and want to have the ability to be flexible and learn as you go.
  • Operate maintenance equipment competently is desirable. Drivers licence may be required.
