Thorough Care SA is Racing South Australia’s overseeing body for the welfare of Thoroughbreds before, during, and after their racing careers.
With Equine Welfare being a strong focus of Principal Racing Authorities, Thorough Care SA was established in 2020 with the recruitment of a full-time Equine Welfare Officer. The Thorough Care SA team is currently made up of John Cornell – Industry operations manager, and Keely Rayson - Equine Welfare Coordinator.
The Thorough Care SA program is solely funded by 1% of South Australian prize money. Over the last 3 years John and the Thorough Care SA team have created initiatives, pathways, and resolutions, regarding the welfare of thoroughbreds bred for the purpose of racing, providing support for these horses at all stages of life.
Thorough Care SA aims to drive demand for thoroughbreds in their years beyond racing. Thoroughbreds are one of the most versatile breeds of horses.
