New $1M Racing and Community / Function Centre for Bordertown

Following the confirmation of a successful application to the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) initiative, Thoroughbred Racing SA has today announced a $989,000 development of a new Racing and Community / Function Centre at Bordertown.

The BBRF program provides funding for infrastructure and community investment projects that will create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.

“This is wonderful news for the community and following on from the Mt Gambier announcement TRSA is delighted that the Federal Government has once again recognised the importance of the racing industry in regional South Australia,” said TRSA Chair Frances Nelson QC.

The development of the new Racing and Community / Function Centre will provide brand new race day facilities for stewards, jockeys and patrons. The two-story complex will also have the ability to cater for non-race day sit down functions of up to 150 people upstairs and 75 people downstairs, making it an integral component for the continued growth of the region.

TRSA Chief Operating Officer Nick Redin joined Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP in Bordertown today to announce the development with the club.

“This is great news for the local community and thoroughbred racing in the east of our State,” Mr Redin said.

“We congratulate the club for its ongoing vision and the development of its facilities in a planned and considered manner. The new facility will not only provide for a better race day experience, but will also deliver great benefits to the local community and wider region through the creation of new jobs for the community and function centre which will become an important new community asset.

“We’re extremely grateful to the Federal Government for its commitment and thrilled that we’re able to make this project a reality.”

Bordertown Racing Club President Max Fryar and Secretary Manager Sonya Lodewyk welcomed the announcement.

“We’re thrilled to be able to move forward with this project thanks to the commitment from the Federal Government,” Ms Lodewyk said.

“The new function centre will become a vital asset to the entire community.”

The new Racing and Community / Function Centre has already been designed by Frank Mastrangelo from FA Mastrangelo Drafting & Design Services and Bordertown Racing Club committee member.

“We anticipate the project will take approximately 12 months to complete from commencement and the industry will now work with the Club and local participants on the timing of when this project will be done,” Mr Redin said.

The development of the new Racing and Community / Function Centre follows the successful relocation of the Victoria Park betting ring by Bordertown Racing Club in 2009 and the more recent development of the track by the Club in 2015.

The announcement of the Bordertown development comes just days after the announcement of the full track redevelopment at Mount Gambier Racing Club and forms part of the same BBRF initiative.

The Federal Government has committed $400,000 to the project with the club funding $519,000 and TRSA providing the remaining $70,000.
