MEDIA RELEASE: Nation’s best apprentice jockeys headed to Strathalbyn

Strathalbyn is set to welcome Australia’s top apprentice jockeys on Wednesday 27 March as it hosts the penultimate leg of the National Apprentice Race Series 2019.

Since launching in 2008, the series has brought together the nation’s most talented young jockeys to represent their states and territories. Points are awarded to each state’s nominated jockey in each of the five races in the series, with the state that accumulates the most points crowned the winner.

Next week’s race day hosted by Strathalbyn Racing Club is South Australia’s chance to see our very best apprentices in action, and to cheer on South Australia’s nominated rider, Kenny Lau.

TRSA Manager of Industry Training Briony Moore said the series is a chance to showcase the significant riding talent that South Australia produces.

“This series is an exciting opportunity to see what our next generation of young jockeys can do,” she said.

“We have seen some outstanding riders come through our Apprentice Academy in recent years, so I’m looking forward to seeing them take on their interstate counterparts.

“It’s a great chance for our apprentices to challenge themselves and to improve their riding skills.”

The apprentices will compete in Queensland on Wednesday 20 March before heading to Strathalbyn the following week, with a final meet to be held in Victoria in early April.

With Victoria looking to defend their 2018 title and Queensland in the lead after two races in the 2019 series, South Australia has some tough competition.

“It is a fiercely competitive series, but I have no doubt that South Australia can hold its own, and that South Australians will get behind us at Strathalbyn,” said Ms Moore.

“It’s sure to be a day packed with thrilling racing action.”
