Prices were up overall at the 2020 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale, held over two days last week.
The 370 lots sold fetched a combined total of $12.63 million, up on last year’s figure of $11.78 million, while the average price jumped from $31,753 last year to $34,147 this year.
The median price rose from $21,000 to $26,000, while the top price paid – for a colt by Kermadec – was $270,000, up on last year’s figure of $250,000.
The clearance rate was down marginally on last year: from 80.30% to 79.06%.
“Overall it was a bit of a sticky market, but to have a clearance of almost 80% is particularly healthy in the current climate,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told The Advertiser’s Lincoln Moore.
The top-priced yearling was purchased on day one by Bahen Bloodstock and McDonald Racing, and will be trained in Victoria by Clinton McDonald.
SA outfit McEvoy-Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock Agency paid $160,000 for a Zoustar-Phyl’s Choice filly on the opening day – one of six they took home from the sales for a total outlay of $435,000.
SA’s Macdonald-Gluyas Racing outfit purchased seven horses at an average of $61,000, including $135,000 for a half-brother to Cashed and Li’l Contra.
South-East trainer Sue Murphy spent $140,000 on her sole purchase, a Smart Missile colt.
