Kayla Crowther landed her 80th career metropolitan

Kayla Crowther was the most successful jockey at Saturday’s meeting at Morphettville – in more ways than one.

Most importantly, Crowther landed her 80th career metropolitan win to achieve the impressive and rare feat of outriding her apprentice’s claim.

She got the milestone out of the way in race one, guiding Phillip Stokes’ exciting two-year-old debutante Instant Celebrity to victory.

The 21-year-old outrode her claim approximately 10 months ahead of schedule – an outstanding feat given the limited number of metropolitan meetings in South Australia.

Crowther was also the only jockey to ride multiple winners on Saturday, bringing the Dion Koch-trained Hushiano with a well-timed run to take out race eight.

The nine-race card featured several impressive winners, starting with Crowther’s milestone mount. Instant Celebrity overcame a less-than-perfect run to power clear of the small field, prompting the Stokes stable to suggest the filly could contest the Oaklands Plate at Morphettville on July 18.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Sign Of Ussuri scorched to an equally eye-catching win in race two. The three-year-old gelding proved his five-length romp at Murray Bridge earlier this month was no fluke, taking control of the race at the 300m mark to salute in fine style. Bigger things could be in store for the lightly raced son of Fastnet Rock.

Star Hills posted an outstanding win on the final day of the autumn carnival, racing wide and holding off all challenges in the straight – and he repeated the dose over the same 1050m course on Saturday.

The Bob Richard-trained runner was seriously challenged halfway up the Morphettville straight, but responded to the urgings of Jason Holder to post his sixth career win.

Elsewhere, Murray Bridge trainer Scott Whittle had a satisfying win in race three with former “barrier rogue” Final Chance, who saluted at 50/1, while jockey Todd Pannell maintained his 12-win metro premiership lead with a win aboard Cracksman, for Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien.
