Jolly's pair aiming for multiple feature wins

Well-travelled import Andrea Mantegna will try and continue his resurgence in South Australia when he tackles the $100,000 Listed John Letts Cup (1800m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

The eight-year-old had three starts in France and four trainers in Victoria before finding his way to Goolwa trainer David Jolly where he hasn’t finished further back than fourth and claimed the second biggest win of his career in the $60,000 Horsham Cup last time out.

“He’s racing really well, it was a really nice race for him last time and I’m very happy with him,’’ Jolly said.

Andrea Mantegna started his Australian career with Darren Weir before joining Archie Alexander and looked destined for a career over the jumps.

He joined the Paul Preusker stable in February and had three starts for Kelvin Burke before coming to South Australia where he’s thriving in a new environment at the beach.

“We’ve just changed him around a little bit,’’ Jolly added.

“We’ve obviously freshened him up, riding him a little different on speed and racing him back in distance and he seems to be really enjoying it,’’ he said.

Jolly is also hoping to make it consecutive $100,000 feature finals when Thompson’s Reward lines up in the Riziz Sprint Final.

The noted fast finisher has drawn a touch wide but Jolly said the bad gate was offset with a few other fancied runners also drawing out.

“He’s going well, I would have liked to have drawn better but at the same time a few of the other chances are also drawn wide,’’ Jolly said.

“I don't give Gatty (Paul Gatt) too many instructions with him, they seem to be getting along really well and he’s a horse who needs to be saved for that one last crack at them and hopefully things pan out for him on Saturday,’’ he said.
