Jolly way to finish the year

Richard and Chantelle Jolly finished 2021 in style celebrating with a treble at Morphettville on Boxing Day.

The pair boast an imposing strike-rate of 24.4 per cent runners to winners to lead both the State and Metropolitan Training Premierships in season 2021-22 having produced 58 winners in the calendar year.

That mark is the father-daughter combination's best result in recent years which has included nine winners from just 25 runners in December alone.

And their success in SA has been mirrored interstate, landing four winners (and four placegetters) from 11 runners in Victoria.

Aitch Two Oh extended their success with the Headwater progeny when she ran rivals ragged on debut to win by 4.2 lengths in the opening race, the first leg of a riding double for Karl Zechner, before Sparkup and then Poysed To Rein completed their big day.

The stable has always had a solid opinion of Sparkup who has proven his own worst enemy in a number of races.

“He’s been a frustrating horse,’’ Jolly said.

“He’s been narrowly a couple of times in town when he probably should have won.

“It wasn’t a surprise to see him win,’’ he said.

Apprentice Ellis Wong had a dream start to his city riding career winning aboard Stealthy Lucas at odds for Nicole Irwin early in the day, Angus Chung’s steady progression continued with a double a Fulton Street and Great Leveller.

The apprentice brigade stealing the show winning five of the nine races on Boxing Day bringing their December total to 49.

And Ichibansan made it three wins on the bounce to claim the $102,250 Southern Speed Series Final.

In a driving finish where less than a half-length separated the first five horses over the line, Ichbansan arrived in time wearing the same colours Southern Speed carried to victory in the Caulfield Cup to claim the feature.
