Weekend wrap: Carnival contenders emerge, Streaky Bay Cup

Tony and Calvin McEvoy ‘s exciting filly Mac ‘N’ Cheese passed the first test in her quest for Group 1 success in the Adelaide Racing Carnival winning the Listed Clare Lindop Stakes at Morphettville last week.

The half-sister to Group 1 sprinter Exceedance is defying her pedigree as she progresses through the grades and distances, overcoming trouble before powering away from rivals and make it two wins from as many starts this campaign.

“She’s got what it takes,” McEvoy said.

Most impressive was the fact the filly firstly relaxed over the mile, but also the fact she was then able to pick herself up after running in to trouble on straightening when she copped a big bump.

“To my eye (she) never travelled,’’ McEvoy said.

“Barend was just at her, at the mile I thought she would travel. She looked to be at her top throughout.

“Coming into the straight I was really comfortable and then he (Barend) got one of the best hip and shoulders you’ve ever seen, thankfully it spurred her on.”

Despite her breeding, McEvoy said the filly gives all the impression that the 2000m won’t be an issue.

“Against her pedigree a little bit (being) a sister to a Group 1 sprinter,’’ McEvoy said.

“Everything about her to Calvin and myself has been a mile and above, but you have to respect pedigree.

“Everything about her tells me she’ll love the 2000m of the Oaks,’’ he said.

Mac ‘N’ Cheese was one of a number of impressive wins on a big day of racing.

Dan Clarken and Oopy MacGillivray’s Harleymoven shapes as SA’s leading Derby contender after he dominated over the 1550m

Coming off an eye-catching effort on Adelaide Cup Day when he stormed home behind Ancient Girl, Harleymoven swept into the race on the corner and charged away to win by 4.5 lengths to make is three wins from nine stars.

Early in the day, yungster Aitch Two Oh continued the red-hot form for Richard and Chantelle Jolly making it two wins from as many starts leading throughout in the opening race on the card.

“She’s a nice filly, it will be nice to see what she can do when she can be ridden with a sit in behind them,’’ jockey Jake Toeroek said.

Toeroek bookended the card when Impossible Action was successful in the last race, a double in combination the Jolly stable following on from their four wins the previous weekend.

He shared riding honours with Campbell Rawiller who continues to make an impression since moving to Adelaide with nine winners from his last 33 rides in the city.

AND 700 kilometres away on the West Coast, apprentice Lachlan Overall landed his first win in the saddle winning the Streaky Bay Cup aboard Grinzinger Star for the Kylie McKerlie stable.
