Mallyon to honour the late Rod Griffiths

Andrew Mallyon will wear breeches honouring the late Rod Griffiths when he partners Halvorsen in Saturday’s $502,250 Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

Mallyon, who now calls Queensland home, will carry ‘R J Griffiths’ in honour of the superstar apprentice and late brother of Halvorsen’s co-trainer Robbie Griffiths, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this month.

Rod Griffiths rode more than 1500 winners during his career and some of Australian racing’s biggest races including the Caulfield Guineas, Victoria Derby and Blue Diamond Stakes.

He also partnered superstars including Schillaci, Blevic and host of good horses for the Hayes family including Jeune and Principality, before riding in Ireland and England.

A race fall in 2000 ended his riding career.

Mallyon has been in the saddle at five of Halvorsen’s nine victories including an eye-catching run behind September Run in the Group 1 William Reid at Moonee Valley two starts back before chasing home In The Boat in the Discovery at Sale.
