Summer is typically a quiet time on the event calendar due to the summer heat, and the busy Christmas and holiday season.
As we head into autumn, we inch closer to some of South Australia’s most exciting equestrian events and race days: The Adelaide Equestrian Festival and the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival. With such exciting times on the horizon let's take a look at the most recent events which saw thoroughbreds excel in their careers post racing.

SHC SA Summer Spectacular Show - 14th January
Thorough Care SA - Bred to Race Thoroughbred Ring
A brilliant event run by Show Horse Council of SA saw twenty-four thoroughbreds entered to compete throughout the day. This show provided thoroughbreds of all levels of education, the opportunity to gain experience and exposure in a safe and friendly environment. RPSBS SA All Breeds Summer Show- 21st January
Formerly the Murray Bridge All Breeds Show, the RPSBS SA All Breeds Summer Show was held at Strathalbyn in January of this year. Huge entries were seen in each ring, including nineteen Thoroughbreds who were entered to compete in the Thorough Care SA ring for Bred to race Thoroughbreds.
Supreme Led Bred to Race Thoroughbred: Jessnah Winterfell & Jess Squires
Racing Name: Man She’s Fast (Charge Forward/Mantova) Racing Career: 9 Starts. 1-0-1 $14,705
Now known as Jessnah Winterfell or Nova to those close to her, the 11-year-old mare also went on to be named in the top five for the Supreme Led Exhibit of Show award.

Supreme Ridden Bred To race Thoroughbred: Burnout & Chantelle Rendall
Racing Name: Burnout (Lonhro/Ashy Girl) 44 Starts 2-3-6. Prizemoney $152,680.
Burnout has had a successful show career since his retirement from racing in 2016. The now 15-year-old gelding is still producing flawless workouts in the show ring as seen by his recent Supreme Champion victory.
South Coast Riding Club Dressage Day - 28th January
The South Coast Riding Club hosted their 2024 Dressage Day which saw the inclusion of some new Thorough Care SA Awards for Bred to Race Thoroughbreds such as “Up and Coming”, and “Best Presented” Thoroughbred Awards:

Up and Coming Bred to Race Thoroughbred – Pale Ale ridden by Eran Boyd
Racing Name: Pale Ale (Starspangledbanner/Velvet Cream) Racing Career: 84 Starts 10-7-11. Prizemoney $256,800.
A fan favourite of many throughout his racing career, the grey gelding is now enjoying his life post racing with Jockey Eran Boyd.

Milang Horse Trials - 4th & 5th February
The Milang Horse Trials held in February is always a highlight of the Eventing calendar being one of the first events in 2024. Retired Racehorses could be seen successful throughout all levels, with the winners out the Thorough Care SA highest placed bred to race Thoroughbred awards going to:
CCN 1* - Sun Quest & Jaimie Stichel
Racing Name: Luxuriant Growth (Exceed and Excel/Take Care) Racing Career: 0 starts. Prizemoney: $0.
The gelding who was exported to Hong Kong though actually never made it to the races and was brought back to Australia for his retirement from racing.

EvA95 – Malvado J and Jaimie Stichel
Racing Name: Malvado (Hussonet (USA)/Wicked Secrets) Racing Career: 18 Starts 1-3-2. Prizemoney: $32,320.
Malvado and Jaimie have formed quite the partnership taking out another “Highest Placed Thoroughbred” award as well as the win in the EvA95.
EvA80 – Nordlingen & Sophie Compton
Racing Name: Bigelow Mitch (Ellusive Look (USA)/Our Condoleezza) Racing Career: 0 Starts $0 Prizemoney. Though the gelding never made it to the races, the now 9-year-old has found a successful career in eventing.
EvA65 - Hussarama & Jeanine Miller
Racing Name: Hussarama (Hussonet (USA)/Nabeul (NZ)) Racing Career: 12 Starts. 2-1-2 $28,600.
The name Hussarama has been seen in the winner’s circle on numerous occasions, once again taking out the “Highest Placed Bred to Race Thoroughbred” in the EvA65.
Lincoln Park Celebration of Non-Ridden Horses - 25th February
Lincoln Park horse and Human Rehabilitation Centre ran their Celebration of non-ridden horses show. This show was created to show case horses that are no longer able to be ridden or may be new to the show ring and looking for an educational outing. Designed as an encouragement for all those starting out or that just want to have some fun, it was brilliant to see horses of all breeds on show.
Thorough Care SA – Best Bred to Race Thoroughbred: Mr Marathon Man and Caitlin Davey.
Raced as: Mr Marathon Man (GB) (So You Think (NZ)/Marie Des Fleurs (FR)).
The 10-year-old gelding retired from Racing in December of 2023. With a racing career spanning 92 Starts for 8-6-4 and $634,588 in prizemoney, Mr Marathon Man looks to be settling into post racing life very well.

SHC SA Rising Star - Grand National Qualifier – 2nd & 3rd March.
The Show Horse Council of SA Inc run many shows throughout the year and are fantastic supporters of Thoroughbreds in their next careers. Rising Star is a Grand National Qualifying show which sees entries from SA and Interstate compete for a golden ticket to the annual Grand National Championships held in Sydney.
Thorough Care SA provided awards for the highest placed BTR Thoroughbred in each applicable event.

Mundulla Ag Show - 3rd March.
This year’s edition of Mundulla Ag was not your typical Ag Show, holding an OTT Extravaganza for bred-to-race Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. The show saw 20 Thoroughbreds competing, as well as some racing industry participants enjoying success with their now retired racehorses.

Raced as: Stryker Fortune (Stryker/Angel Heart (IRE)) Racing Career: 50 Starts 3-2-2 Prizemoney $49,570.
The 10-year-old gelding retired from racing in late 2020, into the care of Racing Industry participant Kristy Leaf-Milham. Together the duo had a brilliant Mundulla Ag Show.
Reserve Champion Led Bred to Race Thoroughbred: Run for Glory & Maddie Rose Cox.
Raced as: Run For Glory (Olympic Glory (IRE)/Nayana) Racing Career: 29 Starts 6-4-3 Prize money $259,170.
Run for Glory is proving to be more than versatile in his career post racing. Rory has already succeeded in the show ring and was recently used as a part of the Racing Careers SA - Track Work Riding Skills Course, to teach riders the ropes of track work.

Barossa Valley Pony Club Dressage Day - 17th March.
The Barossa Valley Pony Club held their Annual Dressage Day on the 17th of March.
