Top jockey sidelined with minor injury

Top jockey Todd Pannell will be sidelined for a couple of weeks following an incident in the starting gates at Murray Bridge on Saturday.

Pannell suffered a laceration to his knee after colliding with the barriers when the Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea-trained Sixteen Reasons began awkwardly and subsequently missed the start badly before running second behind Klabel.

“Todd will be out for 10 days,’’ manager Mel Shields said.

“Where the cut is, if he moves his knee, he could potentially split the stitches,’’ she said.

Pannell finished second in last season’s Metropolitan Rider’s Premiership with 41 wins, riding 63 across South Australia.
