Weekend Wrap: Kayla starts new racing season off hot, Nunes shows class on debut

Kayla Crowther started the 2024-25 racing season in style with a riding treble at Murray Bridge on Saturday.

Crowther, who finished third on the South Australian Jockey Premiership in 2023-24, was on the board early when Quite The Lass scored for Victorian trainers David Brideoke and Matt Jenkins.

She made it a race to race double when Falanghina landed some good bets to score for the Stokes stable before that same combination claimed the last when Brazen Kingdom defeated Merchant Boss.

“I had some really good rides especially these two for the Stokes stable (over) from Melbourne,’’ Crowther said.

“They won really easily, they were well placed. Good job by the team at Pakenham and the team here of course.

“It’s a team effort, they have a great system and it gets the results,’’ she said.

Star Singapore jockey Manoel Nunes made an immediate impact on South Australian racing with a double getting Maracourt back into the winner’s stall before he produced a brilliant ride aboard Fox Gem for the John MacMillan stable.

“It’s fantastic to ride my second winner here,’’ Nunes said after Fox Gem scored.

“In the home straight I had no room, but had plenty of horse underneath, the last 100m I got the gap.

“It’s a pleasure to be here,’’ he said.

There was no more significant win then Hollywood High’s victory in the opening race for the Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor stable, SA’s most progressive stable winning the first race of the new season and owned by Angaston Park’s owner Wayne Mitchell.

“It’s very special,’’ Bain said.

“Our first runner out of Angaston, owned by Wayne, his first runner in those colours in the state, it’s a special win,’’ he said.

Apprentice Taylor Johnstone also landed a significant win getting Klabel home at her first ride for the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable.
