Weekend Wrap: Metro doubles for Milnes and Newitt

A metropolitan double was the centerpiece to a massive week in the saddle for star apprentice Rochelle Milnes.

After kicking things off with a Strathalbyn double on Wednesday, Milnes had a Morphettville pair before finishing with another two victories at Port Augusta on Sunday to make it six wins (and five placings) for the week.

It started with the David Jolly trained The Plastics who broke through in maiden company at Strathalbyn before Pretentious Lass defied a big drip to claim the last race mid-week.

Milnes’ Morphettville double came with the light-raced Annie’s Rose from the Alexander Justice stable before she got last year’s Murray Bridge Cup winner Jack The Lad back to winning form for the Wayne Francis and Glen Kent stable.

The horse set to try and chase consecutive Murray Bridge features in October.

“That’s the plan,’’ Kent said.

“I said to the boys that will be the one,’’ he said.

Kent said the horse had come back in great order, evident with his ability to win first-up for the first time in his successful career.

“After his last prep we bottomed him out, going to Melbourne just gutted him a bit,’’ Kent said.

“He went to the paddock with some fitness under his belt,’’ he said.

Milnes’ big week culminating with her two wins at Port Augusta on Sunday aboard Castlecomer for local horseman Darren Bonetti and Super Sharp for the Searle/Callanan stable.

Visiting Victoria jockey Craig Newitt sharing riding honours at Morphettville with a double of his own getting home Eureka’s Victory for Nicole Irwin before he helped guide Maracourt to successive city wins for the Michael Hickmott stable.

The win setting up a return to SA for the Balaklava Cup on Wednesday, where Hickmott has five early nominations.

“I got there a bit soon, he’s a bit camera shy,’’ Newitt said of the horse.

“He’s a nice progressive horse,’’ he said.
