MEDIA RELEASE: SA thoroughbred career training leaps ahead

South Australia’s racing industry is opening up a host of employment opportunities for South Australians through a new partnership with leading registered training organisation Skillinvest.

The preferred provider agreement with Skillinvest will provide internationally-recognised qualifications not currently available in South Australia across a range of roles including:

  • Racehorse Trainer : Cert IV in Racing – (Racehorse Trainer) RGR40118
  • Jockey: Certificate IV in Racing (Jockey) RGR40218
  • Track Rider: Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider) RGR30518
  • Stablehand: Certificate III in Racing (Stablehand) RGR30218 , Certificate II in Racing Industry RGR20218

The majority of the training will be provided hands-on, with options for full and part-time study and flexible hours for students who are already employed in the industry.

The new partnership has also helped to re-open the way for National incentives and benefits for employers of trainees and apprentices in the industry of up to $4000.

“We are incredibly excited to be announcing this partnership with Skillinvest because it will open up employment and training opportunities in racing that many would never have thought of,” said Briony Moore, TRSA’s Manager of Industry Training.

“Racing is one of the largest direct and indirect employers in South Australia, and we believe this will not only upskill our current industry participants but also attract more people to consider careers in racing.

“The funding being made available to eligible trainers – along with all the Racing Qualifications recently being added to the subsidised WorkReady list – will be a major help in preventing a skills shortage in their business.

“Additionally, because Skillinvest offers the majority of its training on-the-job, the initial costs are much lower than we’ve previously been able to achieve and will also enable us to make training far more accessible to all areas of the State.”

Skillinvest’s Equine Manager Ian Westhead said the training would fill a much-needed gap in the market.

“We think that being able to offer internationally-recognised qualifications with on-the-job training across a broad range of roles is going to put a career in racing on the list for consideration by many more people, both in metro and rural areas of South Australia,” he said.
