Racing to return to Mount Gambier

The Mount Gambier Racing Club will next week host its first meeting since early December.

In order to allow the track to consolidate, the previous three meeting scheduled for Mount Gambier were transferred to other South-East tracks.

However, the green light has officially been given for the seven-race meeting next Wednesday, after several horses were galloped on the track earlier this week.

Club general manager Brett Watson said the decision to proceed with next week’s meeting was only made following consultation and interaction with jockeys, industry participants, Thoroughbred Racing South Australian (TRSA) stewards and TRSA industry track manager John Tonani.

Mr Watson said although the meeting would be a no-spectators event, in line with TRSA’s strict coronavirus measures, the return of racing to Mount Gambier was “a major positive”.

“It’s very important,” he said.

“Even though people can’t come, it just gives a bit of buzz back to the town and especially the club itself. Plus local trainers can actually race on their home track.”

Mr Watson said the resumption of racing at Mount Gambier was also good news for club staff and sponsors.

“It’s great news for our full-time employees, which includes full-time track staff, plus our casuals,” he said.

“It’s also good for sponsors and everyone involved to see racing back. It’s back on TV, so sponsors get some bang for their buck.

“We’ve got at least one new sponsor, so it’s good for them to get some coverage as well.”
