Xilong heads deep field of 3YO sprinters in Redelva Stakes

A ripper field of promising three-year-old sprinters, headed by filly Xilong, has assembled for the Listed Winning Edge Presentation Redelva Stakes over 1100m at Morphettville tomorrow.

In another mouth-watering entrée to the upcoming 2020 Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, Xilong is among the top fancies, after a cracking third behind star juvenile duo Probabeel and Funstar in the 1400m Group 1 Surround Stakes at Randwick on February 29.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained daughter of Deep Field won three of her four starts last campaign, including two wins at Morphettville and a breakthrough Black Type success at Sandown over 1400m. Xilong will need to be on her game tomorrow however, as the field contains plenty of depth and a sprinkling of potentially untapped talent.

Garner is a known commodity and lost no admirers with his second behind Shamino in the Listed Manihi Classic (1100m) at Morphettville a fortnight ago. A wider barrier this time could suit the dual Melbourne winner better than last start, when he drew the rails.

A close-up fourth behind Alligator Blood in a Caulfield Guineas Prelude in the spring reads well for Roccabascerana, which will have his first start for local trainer Will Clarken tomorrow. Roccabascerana – who won his previous two starts at Morphettville, when trained by David Jolly – trialled well behind Sunlight and Kemalpasa last week and is perfectly drawn to make an impression.

Clarken has two other live chances: unbeaten Good Journey filly Garvoc and the consistent Lunar Light, which is up in class, but ran extremely well last week after enduring a tough run throughout.

Other hopes include the James Cummings’ trained Tenley, coming off a solid fourth behind the flying Rubisaki over 1400m at Flemington last start, Li’l Kontra and Sizzefly.

Selections: 1. Xilong; 2. Roccabascerana; 3. Garner; 4. Lunar Light.
