Rodney’s pick 6 lands The Greatest Goodwood competition

A lookback through the records has paid off for Mount Gambier man Rodney Summers, who is the winner of TRSA’s Greatest Goodwood competition.

The initiative asked people to list – in order – the top six finishers in a computer-animated fantasy race that pitted the past 13 Goodwood winners against each other in a ‘what if’ scenario.

TRSA received 1500 entries to the competition and Rodney was one of 43

people whose entry matched that of the TRSA staff. His name was plucked from random draw to decide the winner.

The 2012 winner Black Caviar ‘won’ the race, ahead of 2009 winner Takeover Target.

“Well, Black Caviar was pretty easy,” Rodney said.

“For second, I tossed around Takeover Target and Santa Ana Lane a bit and I had a look back at their records.

“In the end I just thought Takeover Target was a better horse – at the moment anyway, but Santa Ana Lane is still racing, so who knows in the future.”

The top six was rounded out by 2016 winner Black Heart Bart (fourth), 2017 winner Vega Magic (fifth) and 2015 winner Flamberge (sixth).

“Black Heart Bart and Vega Magic were easy,” Rodney said.

“But the last one was hard. I was tossing up between Flamberge and Platelet (2013). I’m glad I went with Flamberge.”
For his effort, Rodney won prizes totalling $2600, including a table for 10 in Restaurant 1873 on 2021 Goodwood Day and $500 cash.

“I haven’t been to a Goodwood day meeting yet,” Rodney said. “It should be great next year.”

In the meantime, Rodney is busy studying the form for this Saturday’s 2020 Goodwood day meeting at Morphettville and enjoying the 2020 SA Autumn Racing Carnival.

“I thought last week’s meeting was sensational,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend’s meeting already.”
And his tip for Saturday’s big race?

“Trekking if it’s dry, Xilong if it’s soft.”

TRSA thanks everyone who submitted an entry to the competition. TRSA is also appreciative of the contributions donated by Brett Davis and Terry McAuliffe.

Finishing order (top 6):

  1. Black Caviar
  2. Takeover Target
  3. Santa Ana Lane
  4. Black Heart Bart
  5. Vega Magic
  6. Flamberge
