A conversation with: Sophie Logan

Sophie Logan has made steady progress since moving to South Australia and taking up an apprenticeship with trainer Grant Young at Murray Bridge. The now 26-year-old has worked hard to earn a reputation as a solid rider, but was always destined to be involved in the industry in some capacity.

Thanks for taking a few minutes to chat, Sophie. How long have been riding for?

No worries. I’ve been an apprentice for probably two years.

Did you have a love of horses before you thought about becoming a jockey?

Yeah, I’ve had horses since I was a baby. I started riding ponies when I was about six.

What is it you love about horses?

I love riding. To be honest, I just love everything about them.

I’ve still got ponies at home and when I go home (to Victoria) I enjoy hacking around, but I don’t have a horse over here at the moment.

Do you have any pets at your SA home?

Yeah, I have two dogs and a cat. I’ve got Gypsy and Keira, my two dogs, and Lulu, my cat. They’re my little SA family over here.

So how did you get into the industry?

My dad, Paul, was a jockey, so I’ve always been around the racing industry. Dad was in Stony Creek, down that way.

I moved to South Australia about three years and went straight to Grant (Young) at Murray Bridge. It’s been great.

What advice would you give to young people looking to enter the industry?

If it’s something you want to do, just chase your dreams. It’s definitely worth it and the rewards can be fantastic.

Finally, what’s been your biggest thrill in racing?

Hmm…I’d say definitely riding winners. That would be it. I recently had a double in town, which was fantastic. That was a thrill.

Well hopefully you can ride a few more soon. Thanks, Sophie.

Yes I hope so too. No problem. Thank you.
