Exciting mare heads Adelaide Cup noms

Exciting mare Tralee Rose headlines the 29 nominations for Monday week’s $302,250 Group 2 TAB Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.

The highly-promising four-year-old is one of two horses nominated by Warrnambool and Ballarat horseman Symon Wilde, who could also bring Nelson to Adelaide, a European import part-owned by Lloyd Williams.

Nelson has had just the two starts in Australia and is among the eight runners in Saturday’s $140,000 Listed Roy Higgins Quality over 2600m at Flemington all nominated for the two-mile feature.

Williams, who won a fourth Adelaide Cup in 2020 with King Of Leogrance, could have dual Cup runners, with Saracen Knight among entries. The stayer is now in the care of 2011 Adelaide Cup-winning trainer Robert Hickmott after four starts with the Danny O’Brien stable.

Dual-state horseman Phillip Stokes has last year’s Cup runner-up Good Idea set to return to Adelaide while Ripcord is one of three entries for 2019 Adelaide Cup winning trainer Paul Preusker. Preusker has also nominated Rising Archie, a son of 2002 SA Oaks winner She’s Archie, and Vividredsky.

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have three nominations, jumper Big Blue, Fanciful Toff and Playoffs, while the Lindsay Park team of Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig have Sin To Win trying to give the stable a third Adelaide Cup in six years.

Anthony and Sam Freedman have entered Starcaster, who has won his past two over 2500m in Melbourne with star rider Jamie Kah in the saddle, including a last-start victory in the Torney Cup at Moonee Valley.

Archie Alexander has two entries, Mosh Music and Barade, who finished fourth in Wednesday’s Launceston Cup when a heavily backed favourite, while winner Glass Warrior and third placegetter White Hawk are also among nominations.

Barade is raced by OTI Racing, which has also nominated Darvin, a lightly-raced import, trained at Warrnambool by Matthew Williams.

Eperdument will tackle her second Adelaide Cup for Strathalbyn horseman Shane Oxlade after running second in the Birthday Cup before a solid effort when running third behind Tralee Rose in the Lord Reims last time out.
