Sires bypass to pay dividends

Richard Jolly is confident the stable made the right call in bypassing last week’s Sires’ Produce with promising youngster Karacasu.

A last-start runner-up behind Cloudy in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes, Karacasu stays at 1200m and appears to have found the perfect race. He is marked a $3.30 favourite with tab.com.au in the Group 3 David Coles AM (formerly National) Stakes (1200m).

“I’m really glad we made the decision to scratch him last week,” Jolly said.

“We looked at the barrier draw and the speed in the race and where he was probably going map and just thought it wasn’t going to work.

“This looks a much better race for him.”

Jolly said he was wasn’t fazed by drawing wide in a race where there looks to be some good tempo drawn his inside.

“I’m not all concerned drawing nine of nine – I’d much prefer to be there than one or two,” Jolly said.

“He’s big horse and the barrier should suit him.”

And he expects the son of Headwater to have no issues with a rain-affected surface after winning on a soft 5 rated track at his second start.

“He’s worked on a bit of soft ground but until you put them on it you never know,” Jolly said.

“But he’s pretty light on his feet and at a guess it won’t worry him.”

While the focus for the stable will be on Kemalpasa in the Group 1 Goodwood, Richard and Chantelle will also saddle up Graciebird in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m), while Regalo Di Gaetano will be second-up from a spell in the R A Lee Stakes.
