Christmas Comes Early for Ellis

CHRISTMAS has come early for apprentice Ellis Wong who will make his city riding debut at Morphettville on Boxing Day.

Wong, 21 was granted his licence to ride in the metropolitan area by Racing SA Stewards on Tuesday and can take up to three rides at his city debut.

He kicked off his riding career at Naracoorte back in February and has ridden 28 wins, 16 coming in the past three months.

Wong got a feel for the city winning aboard Miss Miduki at last Friday night’s Christmas Twilight meeting at Morphettville and boss Gary Searle said it was the perfect time to take the next step in his riding career.

“He’s going along really well, he deserves it,’’ Searle said.

“It’s the right time, his confidence is up and he’s going forward.

“And it works well, he starts off with the three rides this weekend and then he can step that up at Gawler and Murray Bridge over the next three weeks so that’s a nice progression for him at city level,’’ he said.

Racing SA Apprentice Academy Master Briony Moore said Wong was a name to keep an eye as he progresses through the SA riding ranks.

“Ellis has really thrived being in the Gawler environment the trainers have really embraced his hard work and dedication,’’ Moore said.

“And this is being reflected with the opportunities and winners he's getting.

“There is no doubt with this opportunity to ride in the Metropolitan area Ellis will do extremely well, he is definitely a name to follow,’’ she said.
