Racing SA launch track work riding skills course

Racing SA has launched a new course aimed at developing the skills of horse men and women to help them on the path to becoming track work riders.

Running over twelve weeks, the Racing SA Track Work Riding Skills Course, will be delivered by former jockey Clare Lindop, and those with equestrian skills are encouraged to apply.

“Track work riding is a prestigious position, and a crucial element in getting a horse ready to race,” said Racing SA Industry Development and Training Officer Lindop.

“There is a definite need for more track work riders, but for trainers it’s a challenge to put inexperienced riders on race horses for safety purposes. So that’s where this course can help in upskilling and building confidence.

“Even those who are coming from industry with equestrian skills or working in a stable already, can benefit from this course because it is challenging to ride track work.

“We teach participants in a controlled environment on retired race horses who’ve been re-trained. So it’s a nice way to start off learning different tempos, and new riding styles and techniques.”

The pilot program, supported by the Government of South Australia and Skillinvest, is all about getting those who love horses “job ready”, and could also open the door to earning extra income, or securing a traineeship at Morphettville, metropolitan Adelaide, or in country areas such a Port Lincoln, Mount Gambier or Murray Bridge.

“If you’ve always wanted to learn track work this could be for you. Becoming a track work rider is a skill that’s sought-after everywhere. You could use this to travel and go on an adventure overseas,” Lindop said.

“You look at some of the riders who’ve ridden big name horses – not saying everyone is going to get there – but Black Caviar’s track work rider was a crucial part of the team and went everywhere with her.

“I also think a lot of people haven’t realised you can earn an income from track work riding, which could help in funding show horses in the equestrian world.”

The three month Racing SA Track Work Riding Skills course counts towards Certificate III in Racing (Track Rider), and participants can earn four of the 12 credits needed to complete the Certificate.

There’s limited spots available, with the training to take place in the Adelaide Hills.

“Students will need to commit up to three half days a week throughout the twelve week course, and if they are stable hands we can work the hours around their current job,” Lindop said.

“We have room for twelve riders for the pilot program and the course will include theory, bookwork and practical handling of thoroughbreds, and help build up conditioning because the fitness levels needed for riding track work is quite high.

“It’ll also give an insight on how to keep a horse happy and healthy, and delve into racing terminology.”

Applications are now open and the course is open for school leavers 17 years and older.
