Surgery confirmed for Pannell

Top jockey Todd Pannell will have surgery on a badly broken collar bone on Friday.

The leading hoop had a second scan on Thursday which revealed the extent of the injury sustained in a trackwork fall at Morphettville on Tuesday

“It’s actually broken in three places,’’ Pannell’s manager Melissa Shield said.

“That explains why he’s been in so much pain.

“He had it re x-rayed this morning and is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow at 7am,’’ she said.

Despite the set back Shield said she had been trying to keep Pannell positive with an eye at returning in time for some key rides during the Adelaide Racing Carnival.

“I’ve been telling him, just try and think positive, and we can aim to be back for the Sangster,’’ Shield said.

“If it’s not the Sangster then the Derby, and if it’s not the Derby then we can aim to get back for the Goodwood,’’ she said.
