Opperman and Farooq eye Mount Gambier feature

Talented South-East galloper Farooq will have to overcome the outside barrier to win Friday’s $54,750 Mount Gambier Gold Cup.

Naracoorte trainer Sue Murphy has endured a disappointing few weeks with high-class stablemate Hasta La War sidelined again on the eve of the Adelaide Cup, but Farooq can turn that around by recording his 10th win at just his 32nd  start.

Farooq finished third in the Listed C S Hayes Stakes at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day last time out and will be ridden by gun apprentice Jacob Opperman in the feature.

It’s a Mount Gambier Cup loaded with talent.

Dexter You Devil comes off a big run behind Splash Some Cash in the Port Lincoln Cup, Murray Bridge trainer Mick Huxtable has Group 3 placed Ritratto in the feature while local horseman Peter Hardacre has Sebonna chasing his fifth win from his past nine starts.

Opperman has a full book of eight rides including talented mare Picaroon who returns from a short spell.

The Michael O’Leary-trained mare hasn’t raced since January when beaten just 2.25 lengths at Flemington after winning the Alcopop Series Final at Morphettville in December.
