Stable staff honoured at new-look awards

The hard work and dedication of South Australia’s stable staff will be recognised as part of the annual 2022 TAB Racing SA Industry Awards.

The gala event will this year include two new award categories – one for trackwork riders and one for strappers/stablehands– to acknowledge the vital role they play in the industry.

For the first time this year, South Australian Thoroughbred Racing’s Hall of Fame and Industry Awards will be held as two separate events. The programming change will allow for the introduction of the two new awards while ensuring the existing categories are duly honoured.

The 2022 TAB Racing SA Industry Awards will be held on Saturday, 27 August, 2022 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with the SA Hall of Fame to be conducted on Saturday, 12 November, 2022 at the Terrace Bar Morphettville.

Racing SA CEO Nick Redin said the industry has much to celebrate and it made sense to do so across two separate events.

“Our annual Industry Awards shine a light on our top achievers for the season and trackwork riders and stable staff certainly deserve to be included in this,” Redin said.

“There are many stable staff across the state who work tirelessly year round and deserve recognition. They are often out of the spotlight but they are the engine room of the industry and play a significant role in its continuing success.”

Strappers play a vital role in ensuring the wellbeing of a stable’s horses, while trackwork riders are crucial in helping train thoroughbreds to peak fitness.

The criteria for the two new awards are as follows:

  • Trackwork Rider Award

A trackwork rider, non-apprentice or trial approved rider who deserves recognition for their outstanding work ethic and overall commitment to the industry. Submissions are required to come from a licensed trainer and will be judged by the Racing SA Board.

  • Strapper/Stablehand Award

Presented to a strapper/stablehand who deserves recognition for their outstanding work ethic and overall commitment to the industry, as well as the manner in which their horses are presented on raceday. Submissions are required to come from a licensed trainer and will be judged by the Racing SA Board.

Submissions for these awards are now open and can be made online via the Racing SA website here.

Two of Racing SA’s existing awards are also now open for online nominations:

  • Most Outstanding Achievement Award by a Club
  • Most Outstanding Achievement Award by and Individual or Volunteer Group

The Racing SA Industry Awards recognise the top jockeys, trainers, horses, administrators, trackwork riders and strappers for the current racing season across 16 industry award categories.

The South Australian Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame is the highest of accolades awarded to both human and horse. It was established in 2001 to celebrate the achievements of the horses, jockeys, trainers and administrators who, through their dedication and contribution to thoroughbred racing, have become heroes of the turf.
