False start Flow: 200 starts beckon for modern marvel

If there is a racing god, local cult hero Flow Meter will win ‘Congrats Flow Meter on 200 Handicap’ at Morphettville on Saturday.

Flow Meter has had 30 jockeys, raced at 15 tracks over his nine seasons of racing which all comes to an end in just 10 days’ time when the 2021-22 racing season concludes.

It’s been a bumpy road to the 200-start milestone over the past week for Flow Meter.

The rising 13-year-old was entered for Morphettville and Bordertown last weekend, trainer John Hickmott opted to scratch from the Saturday meeting in preference for Bordertown before that meeting was postponed.

Fast forward seven days and Morphettville is where he will clock up his milestone.

For Hickmott, he’s content knowing his good mate will be back in his happy place at the races.

“As long as he pulls up OK, I’ll be happy,’’ Hickmott said.

“He’s bumping into a small but handy field, you know he always puts in 110 per cent,’’ he said.

It will be his 60th start on the Parks track at Morphettville but it might not be the last time he’s at the races, a chance he could have start 201 on his home track at Murray Bridge at the end of the month.

For Hickmott, seeing Flow Meter farewell racing will be an emotional day.

“He’s gets upset if we don’t take him to the races,’’ Hickmott said.

“He’s still earning prizemoney and he loves doing what he’s doing.

“He’s pretty tenacious.

“He’s our friend, we love him. He’s one of my great mates,’’ he said.
