Industry mourns the loss of Ken Smith

South Australian racing is mourning the passing of prolific owner/breeder and administrator Ken Smith.

Smith, 80, passed away on Monday after a raft of health issues in recent years.

Ken Smith and wife Helen (pictured) are widely known for their Exalted horses who carry the white silks with a pink slash and blue sleeves and won more than 220 races over four generations and produced 58 individual winners.

Smith also spent time on the board of Thoroughbred Racing SA (Racing SA) and the South Australian Jockey Club, the family enjoying their greatest racing moment in 2006 when they won the Group 1 Adelaide Cup with Exalted Time.

"Ken had a massive influence on the South Australian racing industry as a prolific owner racing his horses with Helen and was integral to maintaining a strong local breeding industry," Racing SA chief executive Nick Redin said.

"He also contributed significantly off the track in his work with roles on numerous boards and committees including, Thoroughbred Racing SA and the South Australian Jockey Club.

"Ken leaves a lasting legacy and will be sorely missed."

His health battle saw them recently sell their Narrung Stud in May along with their extensive racing and breeding stock.
