Tributes flow for Bushy Trenowden

South Australian racing lost a country icon on the weekend with the passing of Bushy Trenowden aged 77.

Trenowden grew up in Willaston before moving to Ceduna in 1964 taking up training horses in the 1970’s where he dominated Eyre Peninsula Racing winning a host of premierships and country features.

Aside of his deeds as a trainer he was the Ceduna Racing Club President for several years, a life member of the club and also life member of the Eyre Peninsula Racing Association.

His efforts saw him awarded Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual at the Racing SA awards.

Trenowden trained more than 400 winners during his career including at least seven Ceduna Cups, the most recent with It’s Humphrey in 2020.

“You only have to see the incredible comments from people across social media since his tragic passing, the respect and regard he was held,’’ nephew Greg Irvine said.

“This was certainly no surprise to me - I’ve seen it all my life.

“The amount of voluntary work he did for the club and industry in general is immeasurable.

“Words like champion and legend often get thrown around in our industry - but they fit nicely when you reflect on the life and career of a truly wonderful man.

“He will be remembered by most in our industry as a leading trainer, mentor, supporter and friend. To me he was the best uncle you could want - he was a legend and my hero,” he said.

Bushy's funeral will be held in Ceduna on Friday 26 August.
