Racing SA introduces apprentice race series in recognition of industry icon Bushy Trenowden

As a tribute to South Australian racing icon Bushy Trenowden, Racing SA are recognising his invaluable contribution to the industry by naming an Eyre Peninsula apprentice race series in his honour, the Bushy Trenowden Eyre Peninsula apprentice race series.

Bushy Trenowden, a country racing icon, passed away last week, aged 77. He grew up in Willaston before moving to Ceduna in 1964 taking up training horses in the 1970’s where he dominated Eyre Peninsula Racing winning a host of premierships and country features.

Bushy was a celebrated trainer with more than 400 winners during his career, including at least eight Ceduna Cups, the most recent with ‘It’s Humphrey’ in 2020. He was also the Ceduna Racing Club President for several years, a life member of both the club and the Eyre Peninsula Racing Association. His contributions had also led to him being awarded ‘Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual’ at the 2015 Racing SA industry awards.

Aside from being a successful trainer he was an advocate of apprentice jockeys and always strived to provide the young and up and coming jockeys with race riding opportunities. Bushy was responsible for putting Dwayne Dunn in the saddle for his debut race ride.

"Bushy was such an integral part of the racing industry on the Eyre Peninsula and South Australia, and it’s our pleasure to recognize him with this race series," Racing SA CEO, Nick Redin, said.

"It is fitting that the industry created a race series in his hometown, honoring his dedication to not only the industry but also recognising his role in providing apprentices with race riding opportunities throughout the years."
